Now, I'm not saying that the FFXIV free trial period is about to be extended to level 60 and entirely through both the launch game AND the first expansion (this is at least two JRPGs worth of content!), and I'm not saying that the first expansion, Heavensward, is actually amazing (content warning: religious cult founded on vore-martyrdom*), and I'm certainly not saying that they've finished trimming A Realm Reborn (launch game) down to be considerably less tedious and ridiculous (THEY'RE GIVING YOU TELEPORT TICKETS FOR THE WAKING SANDS ARE YOU KIDDING ME I HAD TO WALK UPHILL BOTH WAYS), and I'm not saying that I'm more than happy to help folk out in-game (PC and PS4 accounts even all play on the same servers!, buuuut................

If you were ever interested in trying out FFXIV, the day about the August 11th path drop is gonna be a really good time for it. :)

* YES REALLY, check out this entire thread of absolutely insane canon facts/
Spoilers disclaimer and I have no proof but I think Shadowbringers will end up taking place in the first shard, rather than where we are now (.... do we know Hydaelyn's place in the order? I don't think we do. That's unrelated, though). It explains the world and the "angel" in the trailer, it explains Thancred, it explains the "threads" being broken, and it explains why we keep hearing [name redacted] of all people in our heads.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but if I'm right I get to laugh.

I tried to post last night and couldn't get this site to load and NOW I'VE FORGOTTEN WHAT I CAME HERE FOR but anyway life update, I'm still a depression beast (brain pills continue to work wonders though we're also still approaching DISASTER SEASON) with low-level generalized anxiety but also now I've been diagnosed with ADHD and am playing the fun game of trying to decide if I want to try medication. I feel like I get by okay at work for the most part, but I can't deny that my apartment and life in general OUTSIDE the office is kind of an extreme crisis, so uh. Idek.

...... All my Rana icons are from Legacy and her hair color looks drastically different even though I didn't make any changes to it (I only changed her tail style) and it weirds me out.

oh god I'd forgotten how much tagging entries on a phone sucks if you're not using the tag editing feature help help help
TRAVEL ENTRY THE FIRST because i was a bit busy near the end of last month. So! Final Fantasy XIV ver2.0 / A Realm Reborn turned one year old recently! And Squeenix decided to celebrate by bringing back their Fan Festivals. They had a bunch of them for FFXI, but that was many years ago, when I was younger and even more broke. And they were always in Los Angeles, which, you know, that's fine, but by the time I was old enough to feel confident in myself to consider going, I was already flying off to BotCons, and two weekend trips to the west coast in one year is still more than I want to bother with, even though I could probably get away with it now. I HAVE ALWAYS REGRETTED THIS. So when they announced they were throwing one for XIV, even though it was in October and I already had plans for TFCon Chicago, and even though it was all the way over in Las Vegas, I was like, I'M GOING.

Fortunately, they were considerate enough to not plan it for the same weekend as TFCon. I was not prepared to deal with that. Back-to-back weekends, instead, which, while exhausting, was at least physically possibly for me to pull off.

So here is my Vegas trip! )

And that was my Vegas trip, in less than 4,000 words.

(It did not END there, of course, because I'd bought stuff for my in-game friends and then I had the drama of trying to get it shipped before leaving for TFCon. I did just barely manage it over my lunch hour. Despite there being a post office like five minutes from my work. I stood in line - THE ONLY PERSON IN LINE - for 40 minutes.)

BUT YOU KNOW WHAT. Despite all the horrid line mismanagement, I had a blast. I will totally go again if they have another one next year.

Had some bad times and hit a downswing. Have re-emerged and started taking the vitamin D supplements again. They help!

Work is still awesome, though one of my coworkers left at the beginning of the month. The new girl starts tomorrow. I wonder what she will be like! Hopefully awesome. I like awesome people.

Supernatural is back again, yay, and I have liked it so far (all two episodes) but also I am kind of worried there is going to be some secondhand embarrassment in the coming episodes. OH GOD SO AWKWARD. Aauugh, I can't watch. *hides behind hands*

I have just finally managed to detach myself from my Kindle and have started reading actual, physical books again! It's pretty exciting. But for the e-book readers! I read a series that I thought was really awesome! It had snark and action and adventure and an awesome female main character! It is sort of steam-punky, I guess? And the first book is free on Amazon! Check it out, if you want. :3

FFXIV check:

One of my friends in-game came after me a bit ago because I hadn't logged in for a few weeks and they were worried (we are all connected over Steam). ... that is one of those things that basically never happens to me. I was really touched that a. they noticed, and b. they went looking for me. That gave me just enough of a boost that I was able to start crawling back up out of the aforementioned pit and I started logging in again. And now I have completed the current story-line (the benefits of already being level 50!) AND earned my beautiful, beautiful relic sword and shield. s-so happy ;o;

My server is finally open for character creation. Or it was earlier. Maybe it's closed again. The point is that now it's been open. Yay!

ALSO. XIII's Lightning is coming to Eorzea! I AM READY.

IT'S HERE

OR IT'S BACK

OR. SOME COMBINATION OF THE TWO I GUESS
Do you want to know what I did with myself this weekend? IT IS PRETTY SAD.

FRIDAY: 6:30pm I LOG IN to play more phase 3 beta. I do not log back out until 1am SATURDAY MORNING. And then I stayed up even later to group chat with my linkshell mates. Because fuck schedules and tiredness.

Saturday, I sleep in until 9 (that is a whole 3 hours! But then consider I went to bed 3 almost hours late...), and after I finally haul my lazy bones out of bed, I decide, okay yeah I guess I should attend to a few things today... post office, pharmacy, few other things... aaand then I came home and LOGGED BACK IN. And remained so until, AGAIN, 1 IN THE MORNING. (Actually, I suffered a bout of exhaustion and took a three hour nap in the late afternoon. But whatever.)

It is like a disease I just cannot stop this is worse than last week oh my god AND I DO NOT EVEN CARE BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT MAGIC OCCURRED BETWEEN THIS WEEKEND AND LAST?

FUCKING CHARACTER IMPORTING.

OMG

RANA

MY BABY

....SWEETHEART, I THINK THEY FUDGED UP YOUR HAIR COLOUR, BUT IT'S OKAY WE CAN FIX IT IN PHASE 4/OPEN BETA. WHEN THEY ACTUALLY START ALLOWING ALTERATIONS AND ARE SAVING THINGS.

i missed yoooouuuu never leave me again :(

But seriously thank god I'm going to be in San Diego next weekend, because I don't really fancy a repeat of this. (Of course, next weekend won't be my first time putting Rana back in the field since bloody October - exempting the actual apocalypse event - so it probably wouldn't be as bad, regardless.)

Hey so it turns out I've been pronouncing Eorzea wrong all this time? Whoops. (Though, eleven years later - 11 FREAKING YEARS OF FFXI oh my god - I and everyone I know still pronounce Bastok wrong. Sorry, Squeenix, no one says Bast-ook.)

Phase three of beta for the relaunch of Final Fantasy XIV started on Friday. For some stupid reason, they're still doing 48 hour runs on the weekend, so it is closed again, but that's okay, because I have shit to get done.

The opening movie is on YouTube, am I violating the non-disclosure agreement if I link to it? I don't know. Here it is, anyway! I didn't post it, so maybe that counts for something.

Guyyyys I am so ridiculous, I loaded up the launcher and watched the movie and almost immediately after it started I began kinda crying like, what? I MISSED YOU, GAME, I MISSED YOU SO BADLY I CANNOT EVEN. What the hell? WHAT THE HELL. I recentlyish lowered my dosage of antidepressants and that is my only excuse for my emotional state and it's a very, very weak one but whatever. I just. My baby! She got eaten by a moon dragon!

Well, she didn't. But shut up. I have theories about why XIV has consumed me so badly even while offline, I keep meaning to make an entry.

uh. Spoilers? For a game no one will play? )

Related to nothing, I listen to this track way more than is strictly necessary. It's AWESOME and the credits it plays over are awesome and basically EVERYTHING IS AWESOME AND FUCK YES I CAN DIG IT.

My brother's current hobby is inflicting color tests on the family. Have an infuriating hue test.

ANYWAY I THREATENED TO TELL THE STORY OF MY CUDDLE KITTY TODAY so I am here to make good on it.

The sad story of the saddest kitty )

IN UNRELATED NEWS I have just learnt that at some point in the recentish past, the original FFXIV servers went down FOR. EVER. Remember they rebooted them after the apocalypse for the people who said they still wanted to play, but I guess things finally dropped below a 30% log-in rate. I am... really weirdly sad about this. It's not like I've been logging in, but it was still, you know, that wonderful world I'd come to love was still there, even if it canonically isn't. It was kinda, I dunno, comforting, I guess. But now it's really gone, gone, and I can never, ever see it ever again. (yeah yeah chill the hug out it's just a video game jecca geez)... Also I still cry like the emotionally unstable lunatic I am when I watch the "End of the Era" video.

... also female roegadyn are hardcore badass and I find myself wondering if I won't have to start a second character just to play as one because holy crap.
So, depression, health, work, monetary, computer, and personal issues aside. I didn't really mean to exile myself, but that kind of seems to be what happened. Whoops. Should I assume I didn't miss much? Skimming, looks like its been slow.

But, hey. Moonfall! Moonfall in six days! FFXIV has eaten my waking life! I lack a proper apocalypse icon. A link to Rana's cover image will have to suffice. I am kind of excited, because I really hope there is a OH NO THE WORLD IS ENDING cutscene, but also kinda sad because, man, finally the game is fun and playable and I have people to do stuff with and WHOOPS THERE'S A MOON ON YOUR HEAD. I guess this is how it must be, though. Bummer.

And it is not so bad. I have done almost everything I wanted to get gone, and everything I needed to. Storyline's all finished up, I fought the big bad and won... There are a couple other things I'd like to do, but they'll be around in the new world, so. It is not an emergency priority. (I would really like to beat the boss on Hard Mode, but with less than a week to go, it does not strike me as entirely likely. Perhaps I will get to try, anyway!)

Cat still hates the new roommate, but lately she's gotten into the strange, strange habit of pawing at his door and mewing and meowing and making all sorts of racket. So then he lets her in and she hides under his bed and hisses at him if he looks at her. Does this make sense? No. It is supposed to? Unsure. (She hides in my other roommate's bed sometimes when he leaves his door open, and then she also hisses at him if he disturbs her. She is very odd.) Also she likes fruit. A lot. ALSO I have decided she is a man-hating lesbian, because she only likes girls, except for the roommate whose bed she hides in, and he is gay, so. Of course, she ruined this theory by befriending my brother in about a minute, but a friend of mine and I decided that this was just because my brother is also a lesbian. Mystery solved.

... she is so cute, though, you guys, oh my goodness. I was really sick yesterday and she spent the whole day curled up in bed with me. I have a few videos on facebook I need to change the privacy settings on so I can show everyone. Not - not of me being sick. Of Sazy being cute.

Also new roommate is watching Twin Peaks and I am unsure if I want to get in on that, since didn't it get cancelled and so was never finished? Hrm. Hrm. I need better false names for my roommates.

By the way, do you like Moogles? Would you like a song sung by Moogles (translated into English for your convenience, and also because you're touched by the Echo and can understand Mooglespeak)? Here is Good King Moggle Mog XII! What a jolly crew he and his friends make! What fun times we have together! I listen to his song whenever I am not listening to my current music. That is only a slight exaggeration. This song is really awesome, okay. Don't judge me.

BILLING FEES FINALLY ANNOUNCED

Fee Type Service Period Price per 30 days
Basic Service Fee 30 days $6.99
90 days $5.99 (total $17.97)
180 days $4.99 (total $29.94)

$30 for half a year start on January 5 omg I can totally afford that.

GLEE!
Awesome: I have 31 hours next week (and despite this, I am only closing once! Which is very exciting) and the first two days of November off! I did not ask for them, they were just GIVEN TO ME. So I at least have the option of getting a good start on NaNo. And I am feeling a lot better than I was! AND WE GOT THE NEW GLOVES AT WORK YAY YAY YAY they are so much nicer than the ones we've been using oh my gooosh.

Less Awesome: oh god nanowrimo. Also, apparently there are no interesting Halloween events anywhere near me, so I guess getting out from work early on Monday (and not working at all Saturday) doesn't really make any difference. And my NaNo region has absolutely nothing planned for write-ins or even a pre-November meet up. EVERY SINGLE TIME I DECIDE I WILL FIND SOMETHING TO DO TO BE SOCIAL... see, this is why I don't bother. Well, that and the fact that it never comes to anything anyway, 'cause I'm a loser.

EVEN LESS AWESOME: Square has apparently hit the bottom of their coffer for FFXIV, and so, sometime next month or perhaps in December (there is no information on this anywhere, other than that it is happening), they are going to start charging for the game. How much will they be charging? WHO KNOWS! THERE IS NO INFORMATION ANYWHERE! Hopefully not the full $13, because it is not worth that yet, and are they going to stick with their original plan of cutting fees if you play FFXI, as well? Basically I am really kind of freaking out (like, unreasonably so) because NO NO NO I don't want to have to pick one or the other and damn it, considering their plans for FFXIV v2.0 next year, I really, reaaally don't want to miss this once in a lifetime storyline (APOCALYPSE!! Or CATASTROPHE, anyway, since part of the plan for 2.0 includes completely reworked maps, so the entire world is going to be redesigned. And characters won't be reset, so it's not even like they're ending the world and starting a new one, this is really an actual thing that is going to happen in Eorzea. WANT TO SEEEE). So, uh. Damn it, what do I do? Other than cry over my current inability to afford both games, I mean.

LEAST AWESOME: I know I said I was done talking about the Family Drama, but adskjflgbfjdbhs my cousin's mother-in-law has had to quit her job and move in with him because she was the best option, and he's got to go back in for another round of spinal fusion surgery and either something else is going wrong or it's just psychosomatic but his vocal chords are beginning to not work so I DON'T KNOW I am resisting the urge to throw things across the room only because I know it wouldn't do any good. BUT I have her address, now, so I can write her letters, if I want.

OFFERED AWESOME: oh right speaking of letters - I do have a couple people on my mailing list WHETHER THEY LIKE IT OR NOT they probably know who they are, but I feel like bombarding the post office again (every time their state of NO MONEY AT AAAAALL makes the news, I remember I am supposed to be single-handedly reviving them), so if getting snail-mail interests you, check out this entry, here, please.

This hasn't better be a joke, or I will scream in rage. (It was posted, what, yesterday? And I doubt SE would like their representative posting a joke like that on their official forum. BUT PARANOIA.)

FFXIV is getting auto-attack omg yesssssssss NO MORE 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 4 1 1 1 (WHY IS IT STILL ALIVE??) 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 'You cannot attack a KO'd target' (oops). I mean, I kinda like their set-up now (it does have some good ideas), but god, I really hate having to click EVERY TIME I want Rana to even just swing her sword.

So, yeah! I give XIV (and SE) a hard time 'cause, look, that was an embarrassingly bad launch, and it only got funnier and more embarrassing as the months went by. But they are doing a really good job of working to turn it around. I am so proud of you, SE. (For example: some of - I don't even know what the hell all the problems were - whatever they changed has allowed the game to run significantly better on my computer. I mean, no, this isn't a hardcore gaming machine, but wtf, it shouldn't have run as poorly as it did. People with hardcore gaming machines had troubles running it.) (They've been running surveys asking the player base what they want to see and in what order, and then they listen, which you'd think would be obviously, but this is SE we're talking about, man, they know what's best so stuff it.) (You can even navigate the menus now! Yay! ... yes, really. The menus were horrible on launch, almost unusable for some.) (Also, the love they've given XI since XIV flopped helped, too.) (... that said, if they suddenly announced they were going to start billing, I'd probably cancel my account, because it's still not good enough for me to pay them to play it.)

I'm almost done packing (should be working on the straggling bits, but, well... I'm tired of it), woohoo. But, 'cause I'm an idiot, earlier today I went to the game store (...I went to pick up the key, then I went to the bank, and then I got lost on the way back and magically found myself at GameStop) and bought more things to pack. Genius me r. (Someone else's post recently reminded me that I need to pay attention to DS game launches now, and then I wanted to go check it out, even though I'd already looked up the price online. And then, hey! They had a used copy of Birth By Sleep that included the cover art and booklet - and the product registration code, which was a surprise - and I've never even seen a used one, never even mind one with all its parts, since for some reason everyone else throws out everything but the game when they buy things for the PSP. I will probably never see another one! So I had to buy it. And then immediately pack it, since it's not like I can get to my PSP right now, anyway! Since it's packed, too.)

And while I was there waiting in line, two things! One, apparently there's another Silent Hill title (STARRING A PRISONER, whee, I'd say more but this is getting too long and it would mostly be WTF, whining, and fan-bitching, anyway) coming out at some point. The girl in front of me was reading the Upcoming Games! list and was like, what, another one? So then we whined a little about how the more recent ones haven't been any good. And then I found out the guy working there had also played FFXI and wanted to play FFXIV (and to get back to XI, but POL kept crashing when he tried to update, so I gave him some hints on how to get around it and a bit of a summary of both their current states). Kinda cool! Never met another SE MMO player (or, rather, met someone who played either and not because I'd talked them into it). (No, really, all the people I know who play/ed it are people I knew before it launched or people I met in-game. And I've only tripped - ie, met in a place that wasn't a FFXI/V-based community/forum - over one person online who played XI. I WAS EXCITED OKAY? ._.;)
Today was a bad day for my department, but a good day for justice. /overly dramatic

I went in at 10:30 and we were just... behind. Already so far behind. And we never really caught up. Yesterday was actually much of the same, which is why we were so far behind this morning. (Cupcakes. Everyone wanted ALL OF THE CUPCAKES for St. Patrick's Day...) So when I arrived, my manager was trapped at the cake station trying to complete a bunch of orders for pick-up later that afternoon. Also, several people showed up to place orders for same-day pick-up, which she agreed to do despite our not really having time for it (argh). I did get to help fetch and put away the load, at least, which was new and exciting.

About 2:30ish, some guy came and got his cakes, and I thought nothing of it because I was busy making garlic bread so I could be done with packaging and go on my lunch break. But when I finished and looked up, my manager had disappeared! Odd, but stuff comes up and if she doesn't say she's going somewhere she usually isn't gone long, so I waited. And waited. And then ran dishwater and started doing some other stuff because she was taking for ever. She finally showed back up a little after 3 and gave me a quick summary of events: after she handed the guy his cakes, she noticed he didn't seem to be walking towards the registers but rather through produce. So she followed him. And - sure enough! He walked straight out the doors! So she... continued to follow him! She had a pencil with her, so she wrote down his license plate number, and then, with the order forms in hand (which had a name and phone number), went inside, told store management what was up, and then called the police on his sorry ass. And apparently his plate number was unregistered. (Haha, shit, dude, you're really in it now...)

They tracked him down via the phone number and hauled him back to the store (heee, can you imagine the look on his face when he answered the door and it's a cop with a You Didn't Pay For Those Cakes, Bucko message? You can bet he never saw that one coming), where he insisted he'd totally paid for them when he placed the order!

Store manager asked him how he did that. WITH HIS EBT CARD! No, doofus, wrong "how". See, we don't allow people to pay early. You buy the cake when you pick up the cake, to prevent situations like this one. So he finally agreed to "pay again" and apparently spent the entire time griping that "it cost less than this when I bought them the first time" - since I guess we can randomly assign new prices to things on a whim (the idiot tax? Oh, how I wish).

Anyway, that was an eventually happy thing and we all had a lot of laughs over it. (Makes me crack up, still. There he is, thinking he's so damn awesome and smart, getting his almost $50's worth of cake for free.

... and then the police show up at the door.)

What is this entry even really for? I DON'T KNOW. That is my disclaimer and your warning.

So, anyway, hey, I was clicking around YouTube, as you do, from one of the videos in the last entry, and ended up tripping my way to the FFXIV theme song. It's called "Answers" and is sung by Susan Calloway. I was familiar with the name, but I hadn't placed her as the singer in the clips I'd heard before. (They play a short bit of it during your intro, no matter which town you choose. The whole WALK FREEEEE bit, for those of you who witnessed the picture spam.) I'd been rather unimpressed, really, but that might've just been the repetition getting to me. Now that I've heard the whole thing, I find I rather like the song.

Except it is kind of not so great at being The Song for the game! Which is kind of disappointing! Maybe it will make more sense once they add in a storyline (BE FAIR THERE IS A STORY it is just rather a bit scattered and you haven't seen much of it). And, as far as I know so far, they never actually play the whole song. Final Fantasy XI's main song (well, I suppose there are two of them, now) was played in its entirety in the game's opening, and because of that (and probably in part because they actually say Vana'diel in it a few times), it's very much FFXI's song for me. (Said opening video. Or, if you'd rather just the song, click this one. The former has the benefit of including the lyrics and their translation - it's sung in Esperanto. OR, they're also up on SongMeanings.) (Memoro de la Stono's melody pops up all over the place, actually, though you only hear the lyrics in the opening movie.) And the other song is also heard in game, at the end of the Chains of Promathia story, which was huge and epic and definitely deserving of its own song. (Link to that, as well. AND OF COURSE. Obligatory lyrics link.)

I cannot listen to either of those without thinking of the game. (Despite having not yet finished the Chains of Promathia story, myself. Also, for reasons I am pretty sure I am never going to understand, Memoro de la Stono manages to slam right onto my IRRATIONAL EMOTIONAL REACTION button every single time I listen to it. Nostalgiaaaa. And sometimes eye-watering. I don't get it.) (Actually, the phrase "That world was [called] Vana'diel" also triggers something similar. MY BRAIN. I do not understand.)

...SINCE I'M ALREADY LINKING EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE, THIS ONE - sung by the aforementioned Susan Calloway - is the version of Distant Worlds that I much prefer. It also has a nice version of Memoro de la Stono in front of it, though they cut out the last verse, wtf.

But what was I saying. Right. Yes. So then I listen to "Answers" (the lyrics have trouble, I picked it for the pretty video. If you want the lyrics, this one has a better version of them), I think, wow, this is actually a pretty song, and I like it, but I do not see the connection. And I don't know if this is SE failing to get XIV up and running properly, or if it's just not a fitting song, or what, but it kind of makes me sad that I don't get it.

While we're here rambling pointlessly and incoherently about Final Fantasy music, though, here, have a listen to the English version of Suteki da ne and then wonder with me at why on Earth they would feel the need to do such a thing. I dunno, maybe I just have too much of an emotional attachment to the original (by "emotional attachment" I mean DAMN IT FFX STOP MAKING ME CRY EVERY TIME I BEAT YOU). ...(lyrics! - which, if you look at, you'll notice the English version isn't really that far off, but that doesn't stop me from wondering why they bothered with it.)
jecca_mehlota: (...whatever.)
( Nov. 17th, 2010 02:15 am)
Squeenix, wtf are you even doing to this poor game? I mean, good on them for admitting that Eorzea needs serious, serious work (they really released it entirely too early), and I am pleasantly surprised they are going so far as to continue to not charge people for it, but... come on, this is hilarious.

I went and saw Megamind earlier this week. It was so, so much better than I thought it was going to be! (It was more of a process of elimination than any of us wanting to see it. The planning went -> We're bored, so let's do something -> ooh, movie! -> what is showing -> those sound stupid -> Megamind it is!) So I was just like, oh, whee, another supervillain redemption-whatever movie, but then it was amazing and I loved it, and also the characters were great (and! I really liked how they handled the girl / designated damsel in distress, but explaining why is, you know, full of spoilers, so not now). Highly recommend seeing it, if you get a chance!

AND NOW WORK AGGRAVATION I was bothered by a rude old man at work and it was annoying. And then he ran crying to management before I could offer to figure something out for him. He wanted icing put on some doughnuts, which, uh. I've never seen icing on the type he wanting it put on, so after figuring out what it was he even wanted - BE CLEAR DAMN IT - I started to explain to him that I'd never heard of such a thing, and that while I in no way did not believe that he'd had it done before (he kept insisting that THEY DO IT FOR HIM ALL THE TIIIIME because, yeah, no one who says that is ever lying...), I couldn't just run off and do it, and I didn't even get that far, much less get into my offering to track down a manager and ask them about it. OH NO, WE NEED TO GO FILE A COMPLAINT. I think the person he dragged over understood that I wasn't trying to make a fuss, but, still. Unamused. And going to talk to my department manager tomorrow, just in case.

... huh. I've just gone through my list of tags (trying to remember how I phrased one, and I don't remember all of these. Are people actually creating/adding tags to some entries, or am I just loosing my mind?
guess who's back
