jecca_mehlota: (blah blah blah)

Last one for today. Three in one, that's not terrible. If I can do that another time or two, I'll be all set!

[personal profile] thebaconfat requested "A post about what you've been reading recently."

So, uh, I'm just gonna go down my Goodreads list (if I skip it, it's because I read it a while back and only just recently bothered to acknowledge it).

So I guess mostly I've been reading a lot of crap lately. That's what happens when you get towards the bottom of your uploaded books barrel, maybe. If anyone has any specific books from my "read" list that they'd like to have me spew a paragraph about, feel free to ask.

Though I've also been reading MTMTE through all of this, so that makes up for a lot. Aaaa, robot comic, you bring me such joy.
I've officially been put on the schedule for Tuesday, but I won't know what time until Monday. @_@; I am going to be such a mess by then, hahaha...ha?

ANYWAY YEAH NOT DOING WELL WITH THE TIMELY POSTING I started both this one and day 12's and I was talking to my FFXIV friends over voice chat and Iiiiiiiii fell asleep. That happens way more than I care to admit. Apparently I find my ONION fellows very soothing?

SO. CAN I PUT UP THREE ENTRIES IN ONE DAY??

I'm gonna try!

THURSDAY'S PROMPT WAS: Fan fiction vs original fiction: GO! )

Can we call that an entry? I'm gonna call that an entry.

guyyssss a book I totally adore is in the Kindle daily deals today so if you have an e-reader thing or don't mind reading a book in your computer screen you should absolutely go get it:

Jellicoe Road

(not-really-spoiler: the cat dies, but it is not the worst thing in the world, as evidenced by the fact that I still love this book)

Goodreads needs a rating or a marker or something that means, "... yup. This sure was a book I read." For those books you didn't like but which you don't want to hit with the 1-star.

At the end of September, during the neighborhood-wide yard sale, I picked up Franny and Zooey by Salinger because my mom said that people who liked his stuff really liked it, and even though I kind of really didn't like Catcher in the Rye (I guess I didn't actually do disillusioned teenager very well, haha!), it was short, and it was ten cents and what the heck, I guess.

Today I discovered she has never actually read any of JD Salinger's work, haha. I finished the above at lunch and sent her a text saying that, whatever the point of the book was, I sure missed it.

FORTUNATELY I have spent the past week or two finding all sorts of exciting things to load my kindle with.

Also I have to ask my roommate if he's willing to go bust heads down at the post office and UPS for me, because Masterpiece Prowl was supposedly delivered to my PO box two weeks ago. WHERE IS MY ROBOT, WORLD. WHERE.

also darn it I thought I'd uploaded a new icon and I didn't and I wanted to use it here but can't be bothered to go find it right now. Oh, well.

AND I FOUND A SHINY NEW GIF I WANTED TO UPLOAD, TOO, but it's 116x120 and I don't know how to make them smaller and so instead I just cry.

... oh, plus I went to Boston at the beginning of the month, maybe I'll write about that at some point ever.

post script - the things people write on Facebook. I QUOTE: i didn't know that when you posted things "public" that it meant anyone could see it!

fffffffff cold weather. Watch now, as I hobble uselessly about my life.

ANYWAY, I survived the flu. I do not know why I get flu shots since I always get the flu regardless. I also found my desk again (though I am in the process of rapidly re-losing it), and organised the drawer. Now there is nothing in it but computer accessories.

Also I am at war with the poster over my desk because holy crap it will not stay up. I even broke out the heavy-duty wall stick-ems, but IT STILL FALLS DOWN. I am at a loss. Half a roll of double-sided tape, sticky tack, poster mounts, and now scotch tape as well because I already have everything else up there, and just, what. Stop. JUST STAY PUT WHY DO YOU HATE ME. It is not even that large. None of the other ones have this problem. My bewilderment is eclipsed only by my annoyance.

ON MONDAY MY LOVEY CUDDLE FURBALL WILL HAVE HER ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF HER BETTER LIFE awwww little kittyyyyy. She has made so much progress ohh, I am so proud of her. She is so good and cute and fuzzy. Have I ever told her story? Maybe I will do that on Monday. It is an appalling tale of distress and woe. WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE HER ESCAPE OF IT??

Another thing I have done is MORE READING. A... geez, probably a few weeks ago, now, I read The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater and pretty much the only negative thing I have to say about it is that it ended? SO AMAZING. But then I am a terrible critiquer. THOUGH I WILL SAY it was quite obviously missing an epilogue in which spoilers occur ).

I AM REALLY MISSING FFXIV FOR SOME REASON? Rana, you are supposed to be suspended outside the time-space continuum, stop emoing at me about how everything you knew is gone and angst drama etc.

We started carrying Cake Boss cakes at work. They are 27 dollars and are not delicious. No one buys them. I fail to be surprised.

ALSO I AM SO FED UP WITH THESE CUSTOMERS PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SOMEONE (a) LIST A JOB I AM ACTUALLY QUALIFIED FOR THAT IS NOT JUST RETAIL IN ANOTHER LOCATION AND (b) HIRE ME. Else I shall scream and start throwing things.

Keane is performing in town on Tuesday night and I have it off and I HAVE NO MONEY AND SO CANNOT GO you guys it is so depressing I HAD TO BORROW MONEY FROM MY ROOMMATES TO PAY BILLS why does my boss hate me and refuse to schedule me. DOES MY LOYALTY AND PUNCTUALITY AND HARD WORK COUNT FOR NOTHING? Obviously. Sobbing forever now.

First things first, a huge thank you to [personal profile] thebaconfat for the really wonderful card, and also to [personal profile] tainry for the card and present. You guys are so awesome, thank you both so much. ♥!

Secondly, I got a Kindle for Christmas, yeee. GIVE ME ALL OF YOUR BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS. Well, maybe not all. But still. I would love some recs. Sci-fi, fantasy, young adult stuff and general fiction are usually pretty good. Please no romance, though a story with romance is okay, just not as the main genre. Anything that is not completely heteronormative would also be really welcome.

Also I recently finished reading The Martian, by Andy Weir, which I grabbed because the premise sounded interesting (unlucky dude gets stranded on Mars when they have to abort their mission) and because it's .99 on Amazon, and damn it I just got this awesome new toy and I must fill it with ALL THE BOOKS, and actually it was totally awesome and I really enjoyed it. Also I spent the last chapter or so being afraid to turn the page and reading with my hands over my eyes because OH NO OH NO. Basically, completely recommended. (Fair warning, there are occasionally typod as well as a couple times when you can tell the author changed reworked a sentence and accidentally left in a word.)

BUT YEAH RECS? Pretty please? My manager gave the whole department her nasty disease so I am stuck in bed being miserable and incapable of sleep. Gimme something to doooo. And by "do" I mean "read" obviously.

I have a bookshelf. I've had it for years. It has always been too small. And it's been in my father's room since my parents decided to buy me a new set of drawers for my clothing and got it home to find out that it was too long and there was no longer room for the bookshelf. (I have the tiniest room in the house...)

I have a tiny closet to go with my tiny room. I... don't really use it. There are a few skirts and a dress or two, and a couple pairs of "nicer" shoes... and a box full of junk food 'hidden' on the shelves opposite the hanging bar... But that's about it.

So today my brother and I went in with wooden planks and set up a bunch more shelves and I moved my entire Star Wars collection (which is massive. I own very nearly everything from Allegiance through the New Jedi Order - aka the Yuuzhan Vong series. I bought the Dark Nest trilogy, didn't like what I read of the first one, and so am getting rid of the second and third. The first has a short story set during the Yuuzhan Vong series in the back, so I'm keeping it), as well as my Transformers trade paperbacks, most of my manga collection (Fruits Basket, Vampire Game, Demon Diary, Confidential Confessions, Card Captor Sakura, Trigun, and Wolf's Rain), and some random other stuff mostly composed of fantasy novels, onto the new shelves.

Yay! Books in my room again!

Now my brother is talking about getting rid of my desk and setting me up with some actual shelving for my DVDs and video games. I approve, so long as we find a stand for the PS2 and TV that'll put it at about the same height it's at now.

Right now, I am on my way to add more things I need to get rid of to this list, so, uh. Feel free to go steal my things from me.
EDIT: ALL GONE.

Have I mentioned yet that we're cleaning the house? No?! Well, let me tell y- *bricked*

...anyway, yes. We're clearing out some books, and I thought I'd offer them off before we give them to the local church for their Book Nook thing.

These are free. I'll pay shipping and everything. The only catch is I'll need to know your address if you want any of them. (Though actually I think I know the addresses of most people that I know to be reading this, so.) Comments on this entry are set to be screened, but if I don't know your address and you leave it in a comment, you might want to leave two comments so I can reply to let you know I've seen it without unscreening your address, even if it'd only be temporarily. Or you could just e-mail it.

Titles, authors, brief descriptions )

That's all for now. More to come later as we continue the purging, no doubt.

We made it safely there and back!

Tomorrow I will upload a giant post that rambles on about it all. It will probably be friends-locked because I will probably feel the need to spam images (and perhaps a few video clips, depending on my mood) and I'm not sure how my friends and family feel about me putting them up for every and anyone to see.

We stopped on the other side of the border to poke around (we usually do), and we ended up in a massive Wal*Mart. No Alternators (well, no, of course not), but I encountered a fellow Transformers fan in the toy aisle! (This was a first for me! The only people I know who are Transformers fans are people I have converted.) He pointed me towards a store over some other way and they had a few Alternators (no Ravage or Rumble, no surprise). That they had any was amazing, though seeing another Meister wasn't much of a surprise. But they had three Mirages! That was surprising. Liz bought the Meister and one of the Mirages.

I read books! And I talk about them! )

Anyway, I suppose I will need to take the next several days to slowly catch up on whatever happened while I was away from the internet. Wheeha.

Also, I have been unable to consistently speak English for the last three or so days, so if there are random Not English words in here, I am very sorry. I think I caught them all, but augh. Brain.
