Apparently I am still recovering from being dead exhausted, as I cannot be bothered to rename the files from the number my camera gave them? Or maybe I am just lazy today. YOU DECIDE.

If you follow me on Facebook (where my Search function STILL doesn't work. Still confused about that), you've already seen most of these, and I'm still not posting any of my relatives. Because that is probably kinda boring. LOOK, PEOPLE YOU DON'T KNOW STANDING OR SITTING AROUND TALKING AND EATING.

In completely unrelated news, on the off chance that you care and haven't heard yet, BotCon pre-reg FINALLY opened (five weeks, guys? That's cutting it a little close, don't you think?) and since my collector's club account hates me, I got to call them today and sort out what the heck the problem was. Turns out they had me in the system twice. Somehow. But I can log in directly now, instead of the roundabout way of pretending like I need to edit my account info. And I got to pay less to register. So, eh.

And then last night I pretty much went straight to bed after dinner and slept until, like, noon. SO TIRED. Still tired. But not to the point of being unable to function anymore. WORK AGAIN NOW.

Woke up freakishly early Friday morning because we were leaving early and because I have a bunch of errands to run before we left. So I throw myself to the floor around 7 am? Run around, barely finish everything, and am ready to go at 9 am! .... 9:05 the phone rings, it's my mother, she's only just leaving, so I've got an hour to waste. I COULD HAVE SLEPT MORE? Woe. She arrives, we finally leave, everything's good! It's kind of warm, sun is shining... We drive without incident for five hours! Then we pull over to change drivers and, in a display if incredible timing skill, my brother calls while we're at the rest stop. He wanted to let us know it was snowing where he was, had been snowing for the last day+. We still had blue skies and sun, so that was kind of strange to hear. SURE ENOUGH, THOUGH, I've barely been driving for ten minutes when suddenly it's snowing! WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?! I don't drive long ("only" about two hours), because my ankle's still bothering me, and the snow's only been getting worse as we've gone along. (I have a bunch of pictures taken from the car, if anyone wants me to upload them, just let me know. Or check Facebook, since they're up there.) It ended up snowing the entire weekend. And nothing accumulated! It was insane.

Anyway, we rolled into town, checked into a room, and then met my brother... wasted some time, ate dinner, crashed early (driving all day can do that). On Saturday, we went to the National Museum of Play, 'cause they've got a LEGO exhibit right now (Nathan Sawaya's stuff), and it was AWESOME. Here is a photo link dump, but I think all of them can be seen at his site (and the pictures are probably better quality. Light was a little too low for no flash, but then the flash bounced off them). LEGO tree, man and his reflection, paint project, no flash and with flash.

Random other images from the trip include the tree behind my brother's place (he doesn't know why there are chairs in it), a MASSIVE SNOWMAN OMG seriously this thing was ridiculous, and the only magnet on their fridge (I love the duck's expression. IT KNOWS IT IS IRRITATING YOU AND IT DOESN'T CARE. It is mocking you).

We ate more delicious food (we ate a lot of delicious food...), didn't really do anything on Sunday, and then drove home Monday in THANKFULLY NOT A SNOWSTORM (we drove home in the dark in a snowstorm last year). It did rain, though.


AND THEN I CAME HOME AND FFXI / THE PLAYERBASE HAD EXPLODED. (To be fair, I knew about that before I got home again, since my brother had seen most of it and told me.) Those of you who get mail from my FFXI characters, in the next set of letters they're ignoring the fourth wall again. More so than usual, I mean. Just so you're prepared.

Transformers fandom is full of lunatics in the best ways possible. The thread's a bit long, but you can just read the first post for the story.
Entirely too early morning followed by car ride followed by being very hungry followed by excellent lunch, much fun, and a million new DVDs.

My family used to go to New Hampshire for a few days every October, so mostly we just revisited a few places. I actually don't think we went anywhere new. The Mexican restaurant was a place we'd eaten, we've logged hundreds of hours at the arcade that was the reason my father wanted to do the trip at all, and the used stuff shops we raided were all familiar territory, as well.


I don't really know why my father suddenly decided he wanted to visit the arcade, but, you know, they have some really awesome games there, so who was I to say I did not want to go? We hit the used stuff shops first and they had half a million DVDs and about as many video games for pretty much every system ever (big increase from last time I was there). Didn't get any games, but I did pick up a bunch of DVDs, but more on that later.

The arcade was a blast. Mostly I wasted my tokens playing the racing games. I generally don't like racing games except when they're the arcade-type with the whole seat set-up. (I did go a round of air hockey against my father - I won - and also played a bunch of Skee Ball, but the huge racing games take like 3 tokens per game and I only had about 30 tokens.) They'd gotten rid of a skateboarding game they'd had, though they still had Hydro Thunder (YAY!), and they had a bunch of new car racing ones. One was called Drift and my mother talked me into playing a round of it, and it was actually a lot more fun than it looked.

But because my life is hilarious in strange ways, it was kind of weird. They used actual car models (instead of the typical "here is a car that bears striking resemblance to actual cars, but is also obviously not" thing you see). I was going to pick one car, but my mother really wanted me to go with the Mazda RX-8. I like those fine, so I went ahead and picked that one. I made it white, because I am lame and/or easily amused. After watching me once, Mom decided she wanted to play, too, so she jumped in. As a Ford GT (it was even blue). AND ALSO one of the cars the computer controlled was a yellow Camaro. With the black stripes, of course. So Alternators Jazz and Mirage and Movie Bumblebee all had a race. (JAZZ WON. Though one time Mirage tackled him out of the air and made him crash into a building, which wasn't very nice.)


ANYWAY THE DVD STORY NOW. My father, being my father, bought a used DVD, too. Girls Gone Wild. My mother made a joke about the case being sticky and, and I can't figure out if he was making an intentional joke here or if he was unaware, my father responded he could always take it into the bathroom to deal with it. dsbhfjglk my family why.

Also I got a bunch of used CDs and I hope they all work but they were only a dollar each so even if they don't it's not a big loss.

Anyway again, I was just taking the tape off the DVD cases, and one of the ones I purchased was a copy of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. They didn't have a widescreen edition of Return of the King and I was sad, but whatever, I got the first movie free (my mother bought it, then bought the huge long version and so gave me her first copy) and the second one for cheap, and I opened the case to check the backs for scratches and stuff and OH GOD THIRD DISC HIDING INSIDE fell out onto my computer and it was

a widescreen copy of Return of the King. Um? Woohoo!


I don't have a pretty case for it (or any case at all, really), though, which kind of annoys me. NO I AM NOT WHINING ABOUT A FREE DVD I just wish I had something to put it in.

ALSO BECAUSE I AM STILL LAME haha, new issue of Game Informer arrived and they had an article on FFXIV aaand the Miquo'te (the new Mithra) they chose as an example is pretty much Hisime's albino twin, which made me far more pleased than it had any right to. (OHMIGOSH LOOK IT'S HISI'S CHARACTER MODEL EEEE)

ANIKO I SUSPECT IF YOU SEE THIS YOU WILL FEEL COMPELLED TO SAY YOU ARE SORRY FOR HAVING AN INTEREST IN PLAYING YOUR OWN VIDEO GAME THAT YOU JUST BOUGHT. It is okay, you are allowed, I am not annoyed or angry or thinking you are full of failure, it was just a thought I included in there based on previous experience watching you play games so that if anyone was enjoying the random I AM PLAYING FFVIII FOR ANIKO commentary I kept throwing up they would know why it has suddenly disappeared again, if you do follow your usual habit.

Turns out I've maxed out my Photobucket account. Whoops! I deleted stuff until it was within allowed space, at least. TIME FOR NEW ONE.

I've been in Maine for the last few days at a camp owned by Aniko's family. My parents and the dog are still there, but Aniko, my brother, and I all came home today, due to prior commitments.

There are surprisingly few spiders around here right now. I was expecting them to have come in and taken over, as they seem to do whenever I stop paying attention for more than five minutes, but there currently aren't that many hanging out in plain sight.... I guess they were waiting for me. I'm sure there will be hundreds of them tomorrow.

Anyway, my new field placement started today! AT 8:30 AND BY THE WAY I HAD TO DRIVE FORTY MINUTES TO GET THERE so I had to crawl out of bed at 7 am and I'm still recovering from the flight home, but I made it. IT IS SO AWESOME.

We went out on a boat and drove around and I got to do stuff already! No standing around stupidly this time, they put me right to work putting things in the lake and taking them back out, and dropping them in the lake, and hauling them back out, and tossing things in the lake and heaving them out again and THROWING THEM IN THE LAKE AND THEN PULLING THEM UP AND TAKING THE SAMPLE AND we saw some great blue herons in their nests at the top of some dead trees, and a bunch of fish clearly not adapting well to living in the lake-proper instead of the hatchery they must have been from, and also there were spiders all over the boat augh, and oh man, I am so excited and grateful, but I am seriously going to have blisters the size of China growing on my hands in a week's time ow.

I GO BACK AT 9:30 TOMORROW. Not nearly as far, though. I had to go to Waterbury to do some paperwork and stuff, but they'll be picking me up from a much closer location from now on.

SOEXCITED. (Too excited for the space key, evidently.)

Regarding the subject: it keeps happening. One of these days, I really will make a sign and wear it around at the convention. Until then, I will be confused and awkward, and then feel bad when I figure out what's going on. (Sometimes they ask. Sometimes they don't. The times they don't, and so just assume, are definitely worse.)

Um, anyway, survived Transformers convention! Flew red eye home and am too tired to think, never mind type, anything remotely coherent. It took me four tries to get the words in that sentence in the proper order.

In case you'd forgotten, I went with a class to Mexico earlier this month. Then I came home and immediately started moving, and was without internet and phone for a few days. But now I'm all set up! And unpacked! And classes have started again! And so it is time to ramble endlessly about Mexico. YAAAAAY. This is only part of it, because THIS IS TAKING FOR EVER AND I DO NOT WANT TO SIT HERE TYPING ALL DAY AAIUHRKJGMHT

I am home, I am exhausted, I need to unpack and immediately repack, my ankle and wrist are trying to kill me, and we were all worried we were going to have to spend last night in the Houston airport on account of the snow going on all over New England, and even then I still didn't get home yesterday.

BUT I AM HOME AND I HAD AN AMAZING AND EXCELLENT TIME and I'll post more on it later.


BY THE WAY, I sent a few postcards, so if you're one of those people - I had to give them to someone else, because I couldn't get to the post office. Therefore, I am not sure the postage is correct, so if you end up having to pay the extra postage, I am so sorry and if you'd like, I'll pay you back somehow.

In 48 hours, I'll be en route to Mexico. We'll be in the air somewhere. FLYING WHEE. Please do not lose my clothing, I'll be quite annoyed.

(If anyone would like anything from Mexico - like a trinket, or maybe a postcard if I can find a post office - now would be the time to speak up.)


My life consists of nothing but packing for the trip, packing for moving when I get back, trying to reach my landlord about which gas meter belongs to the downstairs, and then spending my evenings packing more, running about Vana'diel like a lunatic, trying to write, and harassing Aniko over AIM about everything else on this list.


...I cannot believe 8 GB is not enough space, though. Stupid mp3 player, not holding both all of my soundtracks and a nice assortment of vocals. I need to take a few things off so I can add some new stuff, but it is so hard to pick what to remove.

Also, need to find a bag to use as a carry on and pick a book or something for the flight. AND BATTERIES OH GOSH I JUST REMEMBERED THOSE. Shoot!

ALSO because the roads might be a little bad Friday morning, my father has decided we're leaving here for Boston at 5 IN THE MORNING.

I need to meet the group at 11.

It is a 3 hour drive.

Maine is back to being a place where I am not! Exciting day. Except not really? We got off late (of course, of course) and I drove for like four hours (which is a long time to be driving, okay), then my father finished the last leg, and he and my mother got irritable about my directions to Aniko's house. WHAT IS LEFT. WAIT IS SAYS ABOUT FIFTEEN MINUTES AFTER THE TOWN THERE IS A POST OFFICE, DOES THAT MEAN FIFTEEN MINUTES AFTER THE TOWN OR FIFTEEN MINUTES AFTER THE POST OFFICE (seriously, what? Fifteen minutes after the town means exactly that. 'That' being, after the town).

WAIT YOU SAID IT'S A HOUSE MADE UP OF THIS SORT OF MATERIAL. DOES THAT MEAN IT'S MADE OF THAT MATERIAL OR IS IT SOMETHING ELSE?

My parents are slightly lunatic when they do not have completely exact directions to something (though they refused to use the directions I'd printed out for them, too, so I don't really know what they're really on about. Possibly they are just, you know, completely mad).

AND THEN WE SPENT A FUN TIME ANNOYING ANIKO. And watching her bird do flips and possibly a lot of time mocking and taunting said bird by not even coming quite close enough for it to bite us. (It is carnivorous, apparently.) There was a hilarious bit where my dog (who'd been brought along, I don't know why) approached the cage and he and the bird had kind of a face off. He's come close, the bird'd go for his nose, and he'd back off, but then he'd walk up again. I wish I'd caught it on camera.

Then we got back in the car and drove for the coast to find Mom her lobster. WE HAD LOBSTER. IT WAS... LOBSTERY. And then, since my parents are TOO COOL to find a motel that allows pets beforehand, we started driving with the intention of either finding one or going all the way back home. SO YES. We got back around 2 am this morning. wtfparents.

Here are most of the few photos I did take (since most of the day I was driving, there are none from the trip to ME, and none from hanging around bothering Aniko, and then none from the drive home because we left at like 9 at night and it's, you know, dark at that time). They are all from near where we ate, and are pretty much all of the ocean and/or the rocks leading down to it.

MY MOTHER, SHE WANTS TO EAT THE LOBSTER. The lobster is better in Maine. (Probably on account of Maine having, you know, an ocean coast?) On Friday, we attack at dawn! And we stop in to see [livejournal.com profile] ineptmagicuser, because we can and it's what all the weird people do. Then we go to Portland or something and eat seafood, spend the night somewhere, and head home again Saturday morning.


Just to eat dinner! I don't know, it seems a bit excessive, but hopefully it will be fun.

Though I will add that today has definitely been less fun than the weekend. I sat funny on the plane, or I did something trying to get my luggage moved around, or I don't know what, but my neck and right shoulder are blindingly painful. It hurts to move. Too bad for me, I had to go to class and take an exam.

The glasses people called. I can pick my new frames with lenses now tomorrow.

But for now, I am going to go try to beg a shoulder massage from Mom and then I might go to bed, because this took a few hours to write up and I'm tired.

NERVES, if you'd rather. We are sorry. My brain has defaulted to Al Bhed again. (Actually, it's a bizarre Spanish and Al Bhed mashup, which is even worse. "Estamos cunno," indeed.) I will try to type in English.

It's just caught up with me fully. It's a little over two weeks to BotCon and I am starting to stress out a bit. My parents still have the disposable phone they bought for my brother back in November when he drove himself back to campus alone (for the first time) in a blizzard. They're sending it with me, but I don't know how to answer it.

I've tried, but of course to make it ring, I have to dial it and, while watching me try to dial one phone while trying to answer another is probably hilarious, it is not something I appear to be at all capable of. Curse you, rotary phone. And when I have my parents home, they always just show me rather than letting me actually answer it, which is the only way I'll reliably learn it. So I'm going to go to Cincinnati with a phone that I can barely even turn on, never mind answer or use to call someone with. HELP AUGH.


Also, transportation from the terminal. I have never in my life hailed a cab. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO DO THESE THINGS I LIVE IN VERMONT. I can navigate subway systems in Japan and Montreal, and I even managed the Japanese bus system (why was I able to figure out everything in Japan when none of it was in English? I will never understand that), but I don't know the first thing about getting a taxi and getting them to take me somewhere.

Doesn't help that the only time I've been in a taxi, the driver nearly killed all of us several times. That was a horrifying night.


Also, despite the amount of travel I've done, I have never actually gone anywhere completely by myself. AAAAH!


Any help or advice or anything anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Despite making comments regarding myself, plane crashes, and Silent Hill that could only be taken as a strange way of tempting fate, the flights out and back were remarkably uneventful.

There was a bit of trouble getting out of JFK the first time. We had to get de-iced and then wait in line for clearance, and while we were puttering aimlessly around the runways, I was staring out the window (because I had a widow seat!) and... doom. A ways off, I could clearly see the shell of a plane. It was completely engulfed in flames and it was surrounded by the blinking lights of emergency vehicles. GAH!

Half a second later, the captain came over the comm and told us that what we on the left hand side were seeing was a drill. Still, was a bit of a panicky thrill for a moment. There's too much "ill" in this paragraph.


Also, we flew Jet Blue, which has individual televisions for each seat, and as I was flipping through in boredom while waiting for the plane to take off so I could turn on my CD player, I saw it received BBC America. It was playing an advertisement for Life on Mars, but it wasn't on until Tuesday (and we flew out on Wednesday and in on Monday). I was disappointed about that until Monday. I had the screen on as a light source, since the reading light was a stretch to reach and I was feeling lazy. I glanced up for whatever reason and saw an advertisement for Top Gear! It would be on at 8, and I gleefully realized we'd still be on the plane at that point. They had two, back to back. 8x4, followed by 8x3 (amphibious cars!) (I think it was "this week" followed by "last week" because "next week" will be 8x5), though they were edited some. They took out the news. I'll never forgive them. (In the second episode, they cut Philip Glenister as well. GRR!)


Trip itself was uneventful, but I did have fun Sunday, at least. Might make a post on that later.



Last Tuesday, as I was leaving the underground parking garage after class (we can use the state building's garage for free after 5, so I do!), I noticed a car. I like to look at cars. Anyway, this one looked a bit old, but I dismissed my initial identification of it because no way would a Datsun be here in Vermont, and certainly not in the winter with the car-eating road salt everywhere. I slowed to look for a logo or anything, but it didn't have anything on the front and, though I looped behind it to exit, there was a car on that side, so I couldn't see its back end.

Whatever. Maybe it was just some normal looking car with a long "nose."


It was there again tonight. So after class, I took the longer way back to my car (which is to say, I walked through the garage instead of taking the elevator from the second floor of the building to the second level of the garage) so I could get a better look at it. I should not have doubted myself! It was indeed a Datsun. And, ha, it was a Datsun 280ZX. (Three of my favorite - in as much as I can actually use that word in reference to this series, since it can apply to about everyone and everything - Transformers G1 characters turn into that model. Prowl, Bluestreak, and Smokescreen, though Smokey's slightly modified.) (I was actually very pleased with myself. That was what I'd initially jumped to, though the model was only because of the three listed above. I kind of wanted to be right, just because Datsuns are so neat looking - though most cars from that time are - and was almost worried it would just turn out to be some modern car and I'd just gone mad or something.)

This Datsun was blue and gray... Fic-writing comes after me again. (It keeps doing this to me after I finish a big scene. It that a good sign or a bad sign? ... Mostly it's a little freaky.) (And, oh, it would be Bluestreak. Gah, creepiness. I may never forgive myself for "Depths.") (I saw Alternators Sideswipe in California, too. Saw some Datsuns, too, but none of them were from the Z series.)

It was very fun to drive around California and spot all the old and/or fancy expensive cars that simply don't exist out here, or at least not in large numbers. Whoo, pretty cars.


(Bonus fun story: my boss has known for a while that I needed all of last weekend off, but apparently work called the house on Sunday to ask if I could come in early to work. Whoops, whoever made the schedule. I'll probably get yelled at next time I'm in, but, like I told my mother, the worst they can do is fire me, and then I wouldn't have to work there anymore.)

So, today plans went down suddenly and rapidly and all those other things, and now I am going to California in December.

For, you know. Four days. Thursday the sixth through Sunday the ninth. Plus two travel days. The weekend before all three of my Finals! Well, one is a take-home, but considering we will leave Wednesday afternoon (immediately after my class gets out, really) and get back late Monday (just enough time for me to adjust to the time zone!)... When will there be time?! ON THE PLANE, OBVIOUSLY. Or maybe I can duck out of the Family Stuff on Sunday. please please please please my CA relatives are so insane


They're burying - or reburying, or moving, or however you refer to these things - my mother's father (my grandfather, though I never met him. He died of lung cancer about four years before I was born), and my mother wants to go! And I was asked if I wanted to go, and since I am always up for a trip if there's time in advance to get work off (which is about the only reason I wasn't in California last summer)...

So, as I said a few days ago, I'm back from BotCon! I was going to write this up earlier, but my poor laptop spent most of Monday undergoing emergency repairs and was scattered quite thoroughly about the downstairs. It was kind of scary. What if something had gone wrong or been damaged?

But Botcon! Oh! It was fantastic! Easily the best convention I've ever been to (and while it was my first Transformers con, it was not my first con ever. Just so that statement can pretend to have meaning, you know). I don't know what it is, but everyone I met and/or interacted with was nice, polite, and there because they liked Transformers. (Perhaps my years at Otakon - DON'T GET ME WRONG I LOVED GOING TO OTAKON - just made me cynical, though. ... and AnimeBoston was even worse.)

I will now ramble a lot about the convention. I will not talk (much) about the movie. That'll be in a different post. Anyway, all you really need to know is SEE IT. SEE IT NOW. I DON'T CARE WHO YOU HAVE TO KILL OR WHAT ORGANS YOU NEED TO SELL. SEE IT.

So, even with all my pre-con nervousness, I had an absolute blast. It was easily one of the best weekends of my life and I would love more than anything to go next year, as well, so hopefully they hold it somewhere (and some time) I'll be able to get to!

I will probably ramble about the movie later. It is so awesome. Go see it as soon as possible! (I saw it twice Monday night - once at the first showing with Dad, and then again at the midnight showing that was technically on Tuesday with Mom, my brother, and some friends. Sadly, but not surprisingly, the crowd was no where near as awesome and enthusiastic as the BotCon group was.)


p.s. - I knew this would happen, but, ugh. Movie's been out all of a day and already new people are flooding into the fandom and writing really awful fanfiction. I just hope they do not try and murder it the way the "Advent Children-only" people (and the "I hate Advent Children!" people) tried to - and, heck, if you want my opinion, largely succeeded - murder the Final Fantasy VII fandom.

Oh, God, that sounds terrible of me. I have nothing against new people in the fandom! I love meeting new fans, and I love it when people come into the fanbase! I am just so worried, because I know what can happen to fanbases when the fandom in question goes "mainstream" and I just... I love my fandom and I don't want it to suffer and die slowly. Or become the next Inu Yasha or Naruto or something (though I know the odds of that happening are very small).

I am just scared because for the first time in like twenty years Transformers is big news. It's intimidating. I'm never in fandoms that ... do things like that. blearshg

I hope I have fun! And also I am sorry in advance for making what will undoubtedly be a very, very confusing and obsessively fan-ish post Sunday evening when I get home again.

I am so, so nervous. Oh, God. Crowds of people. Lots and lots of people, and I'm not going to know anyone. I cannot handle crowds. What made me think this was a good idea?

... Twenty-four hours from now, I will have received my toys and seen the new movie! eeee!
