Fandoms post!
Reason I have the best microcomputer applications class in the history of ever: in this week's class, we elected Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck as president and vice. (The professor was showing us one of the problems with computer-based voting! We had two elections - each "ballot" was the same, but in the results for the second tally, he wrote a program to miscount votes.)
Awesome award. ...Boom.
(Why does "awesome" prompt a boom? Very simple reason, actually. Michael Bay is an explosions lunatic. That article is hilarious.)
ANYWAY. Over at the anonymous meme, someone (I do not know who! Because it is anonymous!) commented that sie wished we had more in common! And I thought about that a bit and it occurred to me, I am not really sure I actually have that much in common with anyone on my friends list!
So I am going to list all of my major fandoms! And maybe why I like them in some cases, and whether or not I actually lurk the fanbase. And then people should feel free to leave comments telling me fandoms they think I should get into! Because I really love getting into new fandoms!
And this an open invitation to everyone! Not whoever left the comment! Because, as I said, it's not as if I'll know, anyway.
Okay, the obvious ones first.
Transformers
Everything about it. The original cartoon, G1, because it is the most ridiculous thing ever. Beast Wars and Beast Machines just... because.
I'm really not sure how much I can say about this fandom. It's been a part of my life for all of my life, and it's completely ridiculous.
Hey, we've got the precursor of Pokémon. (Part 2, Part 3, and I dare you to watch this without going into hysterics.) Don't tell me this is anything but insane. (To be fair, it was the 80s.)
That it's such an old fandom means that the fanbase and fandom is absolutely massive, so there's always something.
And, as insane as G1 is, Beast Wars manages to be surprisingly mature for a children's show / extended toy commercial. There's amazing character development, and it touches on some subjects you wouldn't really expect in a manner you wouldn't expect. If I had to recommend only one of my fandoms/series to everyone, it would be Beast Wars. If you've got time, I recommend checking out the episodes! (I've got a list of YouTube links to the entirety of both Beast Wars and Beast Machines right here, but be warned that there are some spoilery remarks in the comments.)
I didn't get to watch the Japanese series, but I've been watching the current show, Tranformers: Animated and really liking that! I'd link to those on YouTube, as well, but the user who had everything up was suspended recently. I'm not sure how I'll watch it now, since we don't receive Cartoon Network well at all here. There's also the movie that came out last summer. (There's an animated movie from 1986, as well, but that's part of the G1 continuity - it lands between seasons two and three.)
I've been lurking this fandom pretty much consistently ever since getting internet access. This is my Life Fandom. It has always been there. It probably always will be! I love it to tiny little bits and pieces, and it is, believe it or not, one of the best fanbases I've ever experienced.
Okay, I'm shutting up about it now.
Final Fantasy
In general. But I lean most towards VII, VIII, and, of course, XI. I think everyone is familiar with Final Fantasy? Or at least the console games. So I'll keep those brief, but will talk a bit about XI.
FFVII was the first one I played! My brother picked it up at a yard sale, and I watched him play at first, then finally started my own file. WE WERE HOOKED SO FAST.
I lurked the fandom for several years! I read a lot of stuff, looked at a lot or art... I even delurked on a small forum once, but that didn't work out so well and the site went down not that much later, anyway. I think, if not for Advent Children and the swarms of people it brought in, I'd never have left this fandom. It wasn't really a good fandom, but I was used to it. But, no, there were swarms and swarms of new people obsessed with Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz. Never played the game, and wrote everyone horridly out of character. DO NOT GET ME WRONG. I do not mind new people! But I was distressed by what happened with the influx of fans - especially the ones writing AC fiction - months before the film even came out! I no longer visit this fandom unless I know the author is someone I like or if someone recommends something.
FFVIII was the first one I owned! I started it before I finished VII (er, actually, I think I beat this one first, too), and, while the plot and story of VII remain my favourite, VIII wins pretty much everything else. There is not a single character from this game that I do not like.
I lurked here a lot, too. Not as much as FFVII, and I never really delurked, but I spent some time looking around. Unfortunately, the FFVIII-fanbase is, perhaps, slightly insane and full of hate and rage! Mostly I had a few authors that I read while pretending the rest of it didn't exist. I no longer visit this fandom unless I know the author is someone I like or if someone recommends something.
I've played most all of the rest of the Final Fantasy series, and I love all of it! But those two are the only ones I spent any amount of time lurking the fandoms, except for...
XI has my girls! Hisi(me), who's in my default icon, and Ki(hara) and Aya(rei). Actually, I often think I should classify this one on its own, since it's so drastically different from every other Final Fantasy game out there. I'm not really one for MMORPGs, but my brother and I decided that, since this was Final Fantasy, we would at least try it. He had his copy on day one, and by the end of the week, I'd gone out and bought one for myself. I have invested five years into this game. What on Earth is wrong with me? I love it. I love my girls, I love the story, I love the NPCs, I love the world. I'd be hard pressed to give it up. I'm semi-active in this fandom. I play the game and have a LinkShell, and I browse the forums, but I still mostly lurk. This is the only Final Fantasy game I've ever really written anything for. I don't read much in it, just because I don't like how a lot of people translate the game-world into writing (I take it as, my characters are just three of many and they occasionally experience strange things, but so does everyone else. A lot of other people seem to take it as, their character is the only one, or one of a select few, experiencing those same oddities).
Also, I've got a series of journals for my characters, because I am lame! All three can be found at
brinkoftwilight, since I'm too lazy to swap accounts to allow them to carry out conversations, but each also has an individual journal (
hisi_mehlota,
ayarei, and
ki_harahno) where I cross-post almost everything from the main journal and also occasionally post more "personal" reflections. They'll talk to anyone, because I don't believe in the fourth wall.
I would love someone to play XI with (aside from my brother), but it has a monthly fee! So mostly I just have fun running around by myself.
Jak
I have no idea what to call this, since each game is titled to differently. Jak and Daxter? Or just Jak? I appear to have settled with the latter. I was really surprised when I finally bought a new copy of the first game a ... what, a year ago? I'd had a copy of it once, but it didn't work right and I never got very far. Then, on a whim, I picked up the first and second game last year and wow, that was a fast addiction. I love these games. I love the characters! I am not fond of racing! AT ALL! I wrote several all-caps ridden rants on racing! Because I was very bad at it. But I still really enjoy these games! Even while I curse at them. (That's a mark of how much I love something, really! If I declare hatred for it every ten minutes, I love it to bits.) I've stalked about the fandom a bit, but it seems like there are a lot of Mary Sue characters, so I don't drop in often.
Ecco the Dolphin
Since we were speaking of hating things.
Dolphin-induced rage
I express my frustrations
in haiku format
Hatred and loathing
Unholy and unending
So why can't I stop?!
I hate these games. I loathe them. It is an undying, unholy passion. I can't speak much on it because I start becoming incoherent and ranty. I have several eye-witnesses who claim watching me play Ecco is simultaneously one of the best and most frightening things ever, because I start chirping like a dolphin and flailing about like a maniac. I keep meaning to record myself sometime so I know how bizarre I look, but I've never actually done it yet.
Everyone I know who had played these games is addicted to them. They're really great games. However, they are also frustrating and hard. I recommend them - highly! - but I warn that you will never really recover. Time travel, floating water tubeways (and really long falls), giant flying medusas, morphing into sharks and birds and jellyfish (oh, and, on one occasion? A school of fish. Through a city full of hungry dolphins. Oh, Lord), evil space aliens, sonar-ing things to death... TRILOBITES. Does it get better? I should think not! Plus, the games are gorgeous. I have never played anything more beautiful than Defender of the Future. You really feel as if you're underwater.
I used to visit a few websites, but they've all gone down by now. I have a collection of haiku on Fanfiction.net that still gets reviews, and this surprised me until I checked the section and learned I was the fourth story.
Silent Hill
Because, yes, we are still talking about things that have ruined my life. I've only played the first two! I own the third and fourth and fully intend to play them as soon as I work up the nerves.
I think everyone is familiar with this series. I've never really ventured into the fandom, though I've seen the lists of crossovers (and even read some of them).
Other games that I have played but never explored the fandoms for!
Kingdom Hearts - THEY ARE ALL LUNATICS. I'm sorry. They're just too crazy for me to tolerate. I adore the games, though!
Chrono Cross - this is a really excellent game. You don't need to play Chrono Trigger to understand it, though there are definitely connections between the two games.
The Bouncer - haha, this is a ridiculous game. It really, really is. But it's kind of fun, too. Not really a fandom, just a game I've played.
Sonic the Hedgehog - every Genesis game (Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Spinball, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine... Sonic CD, and Sonic Adventure as well as the sequel. I started Sonic Heroes but was never able to get into it). My brother and I loved the whole Sonic series so, so much. I had a subscription to the comic series until very recently, actually! I finally decided I'd had enough of the progressively worsening writing and character mutilations and let my subscription run out. I found out recently that maybe four issues after that, they got a new writer on board who's doing an excellent job with things. But I just can't bring myself to pay for it again. Does anyone remember the Saturday morning cartoon? I loved that! And was heartbroken when they canceled it!
I think that might be it! Though I am currently supposed to be playing Xenogears and Star Ocean: Til the End of Time. And I'm not sure where to put Ōkami, because I play it and love it, but can't even imagine a fandom. I know there's one, but... I dunno!
I am sick of talking! I am sure you are all sick of reading! OKAY. JUST LISTING THINGS I LIKE NOW. Not even things I am in the fandom for! Just things I have seen and really liked! Ask for rambling if you want it!
Television:
.hack//SIGN - CRAZY ADORATION
Heroes - see me not saying anything? This is WILLPOWER.
Firefly
ReBoot - WATCH THIS
Wolf's Rain
Cowboy BeBop
Outlaw Star
Life on Mars - WATCH THIS, TOO
Top Gear - even though real-person fandom confuses me! I've sort of written for this! The Transformers crossover that I'm sure everyone is sick of hearing about by now! THIS FACT CONTINUES TO AMAZE ME.
Sailor Moon - I was the biggest moonie ever for the longest time
DragonBall / Z - oh, shut up. It's silly fun.
Stargate SG-1 - mostly seasons 1 - 8, but I like the later stuff, too
Doctor Who - though I'm only familiar with the newer stuff. If I had more time, I'd probably try to find the older stuff online or something.
Star Trek - especially the original and The Next Generation
FullMetal Alchemist
Fruits Basket
FILM:
I am actually not much of a movie-goer! Though I am trying to change this. Movies just don't tend to leave as much of an impact on me, for whatever reason. But these are the ones that immediately come to mind as having been ones I really liked.
Pirates of the Caribbean
EVERYTHING DISNEY - yay, childhood. Though I still watch them sometimes.
Studio Ghibli, too! (I've been to the Ghibli Museum and it is the most awesome place ever!)
Star Wars
I'm a fan of Star Wars! I love the original trilogy (yes, both the original and the rerelease, though I only own the newer versions). I am less fond of the prequels, but, well.
Also, the books. I own every Expanded Universe based after the original trilogy through the New Jedi Order (and a few based before or during the originals). As far as I'm concerned, however, the series ends with the Yuuzhan Vong. I've seen some of the spoilers for the later books and, honestly, I want nothing to do with any of it. Just NO.
Also, Timothy Zahn ♥ ♥ ♥ Even if you're not a big Star Wars fan, read this guy's stuff. He writes excellent sci-fi, in my opinion! And he's got a lot of it, so there is plenty to choose from.
Also hearts for Michael A. Stackpole!
And, in the reading vein, I really liked the following manga!
Demon Diary - though the ending felt rushed to me, and I've always wondered what the original writer had planned (they swapped writers after the first volume)
Card Captor Sakura - I like CLAMP more than I should, really.
Trigun - YAY TRIGUN!
Vampire Game - again, the ending to this one felt a little rushed, but I adored this series so much.
Fruits Basket - I prefer this over the anime
Confidential Confessions - because having my heart broken and then getting a little bandage stuck on it is, apparently, something I really enjoy.
....Aaaand now nothing else is coming to mind. Am I missing any important fandoms or categories? PROBABLY. But, yes. Do we share more fandoms than we thought? Or do I have any fandoms you are interested in? Or do you have any fandoms I should be interested in?
Awesome award. ...Boom.
(Why does "awesome" prompt a boom? Very simple reason, actually. Michael Bay is an explosions lunatic. That article is hilarious.)
