Honestly, I'm surprised we're still standing.

We've just finished a day of thunderstorms. No, really. They started early this morning - 6 am? Around there. They've finally moved on. (Actually, there was about a two hour break in the afternoon, but never mind that.)

We lost power at work. It gets very, very dark in there when the power goes out! There aren't any windows anywhere near where I work, so it's just black until the backup generators come online.

I wasn't surprised, really. As soon as the building started shaking because of the thunder I knew we were going to lose it. I tried to race it, to see if I could finish running all the bread through the slicer before it caught us. I was halfway through the last loaf when it cut. Blast! The backup powers all of the machines, though, at the expense of about half the lights in the store, so I was able to get the bread finished, anyway.

Then a little while ago, the storms kicked back into high gear. Huge flashes of lightning and house-rattling crashes of thunder.

One bolt, then, though. The air fizzled and crackled and... BOOM. It sounded way too close, so I unplugged my laptop, put it in standby, and went downstairs. Mom says the bolt touched down in the backyard near the barn.

Nothing got fried, though, so hey. Progress.

We've had lightning strike near the house several times. Once it hit the driveway - we had a scorch patch for years - another time it came down just across the road. Once it hit the barn and, oh, that was exciting.

When the dog was young, we had an electrical fence installed so he'd stay in the yard. We don't use it anymore, but we haven't had it removed, either. The control box is - er, was? - in the barn, and when the barn was hit, it literally exploded. No one has any idea why the whole thing didn't just burn down right then, really. It was a bit distressing to find, actually.

The same strike took out every electrical appliance in the house, with the exception of the computer my brother built. It was the only thing on at the time, and he was even working at it. It was fine. Everything else was nearly destroyed.

We had the fence repaired, but it's since been destroyed by lightning again. We think it might've been from the one that hit the driveway.

I guess our house just likes to be Nearly Hit.

I stood out on the front porch and watched the storm for a while. It was fantastic! But it is over now. ... Obviously. Seeing as I am using a computer.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is going to do anything to break the humidity.

Mom gets on her plane in five hours. whee! I hope she has fun (and no, seriously, why is everyone - like five people - going to California this week? SO CONFUSED. California is not that great).

Edit:
Expensive! I think it's kind of both awesome and not awesome that they're auctioning the stuff off. The Allspark. Wow.

And, tomorrow? 93 with 100% humidity? I have never in my life been so glad to know I have to spend eight hours at work on my feet. Oh, that's brutal.
