Are you sure that you're sure you're sure?
New computer has been mercifully problemless so far. It's running Vista, so everything looks wrong and I haven't got it all figured out yet, but I disabled the UAC and a bunch of other stuff so it no longer asks me if I want to allow everything.
It wasn't annoying me too much until I noticed it didn't remember things, and I'm not forgiving enough to put up with having to tell it YES I AM SURE every time I try to open anything.
I AM, HOWEVER, MOST SORROWFUL ABOUT MY LOSS OF WALLPAPERS. :(
My new computer (I... really need a way to abbreviate this. I can call my old one "the Dell" at least...) is widescreen. I knew this when I ordered it. It was too much work to find computers that weren't, so I gave in to corporation pressure (LIKE PEER PRESSURE, BUT MUCH MORE ANNOYING BECAUSE THERE ACTUALLY IS NO READILY AVAILABLE ALTERNATIVE). And all of my awesome wallpapers were for a completely different screen size! 1024x768 to 1280x800... Nothing fits. I cryyyyy. I've currently got all of six in my wallpaper changer. They're all Final Fantasy XI related (from here!), and they're very pretty, but I need more variety. I'll probably get around to resizing and cropping some of my old ones eventually. (... Anyone have any cool wallpapers?)
BUT! But. Speaking of my game, I have it installed and running (holy crap installing it on Vista is a pain. It's known to be glitchy, so you actually have to download a new installation for the PlayOnline viewer from SE. I WANT MY DISK TO WORK), and oh my gooooosh I completely forgot how stunningly beautiful it is when you can play with weather and shadows and animation and frame rate and distance all turned on and all the way up. <3
Also, BLM level 30! \o/ This is probably the fastest I have ever leveled anything considering I started all of eleven days ago. I need to get it to 40 so I can do some BCNMs with my brother. There's a good one with two strategies. One involves two ninjas and a red mage or summoner, and one involves two (er, it might be three?) black mages (and, uh. Something else, if it is only two). He decided to try to put together the BLM one. HE DOESN'T KNOW ANY BLMS. He had it at 37, so I was helping keep him alive in the desert when my Dell died horribly, and then he somehow talked me into leveling mine up from 1 to 40. It's 100% completely soloable of Beastmen pets, which is literally the only reason I agreed.
ALSO THE KEYBOARD IS WRONG AND I KEEP NOT KNOWING WHERE THE HOME AND END KEYS ARE. AAAUGH. And also hitting Page Down when I wanted to scroll up or to the right. (Also I keep thinking Page Up is on the right, when it is on the left.) And the Fn and Ctrl keys were swapped on the left, which is leading to me hitting Fn-YOU NAME IT and then wondering why nothing has happened. That has actually caused me to die in XI.
Enough of that. November! You and your WRITING, man, I dunno. I like NaNoWriMo. I don't think I've ever really made the 50k word goal, but I've never minded. I can't write like that. I can't toss my inner editor aside and just write. I think it's really awesome that some people can, and do, but I cannot. I look at November more as a month where I say, look, self, just write something, yeah? And that works. I do write more in November than I do every other month of the year (...possibly combined). I don't always finish what I start, but it gets me writing, and that's my real goal for the month.
As I said perhaps more coherently to someone in an Instant Messenger conversation this afternoon: I dunno, I'm amazed by people who do write 50k in November (or more!) but I can't do it. I can't just write 50k words blindly. I do like using it as a starting point, though. IT IS NOVEMBER YOU WILL WRITE not, It is November and you will write anything and everything because OMG WORDCOUNT (or should that be, "it is the eleventh month of the year, which is to say, November, and you can and will write both and and every single that occurs to you throughout that month because hitting your word count goal of fifty thousand words is entirely more important than anything silly like reason or sense or even coherency."?).
So right now I've got about seven WIPs I've been poking around at, and I'm at a dead end in all of them, so maybe I'll try to start yet another one tomorrow, or maybe I'll just sit on them until I come up with something. BUT WRITING! Yay, me!

What are you working on? And OH MAN asking that made me realize I never made any requests/suggestions. Lemme go check that post you made. I would really be interest in seeing some Life on Mars fic from you with any sort of Sam and Gene interaction but I can imagine that would be an incredibly hard series to write 'case off the crazy Manchesterness. Manche...Mancunian...ism.
I'm really interested in what the Life on Mars remake is like, actually. I haven't had time to watch it, and I really don't want to since I haven't seen the end of the second series, but, like, one of the things that's really cool about Life on Mars is how the usual cop show about the outsider cop is where he's like this badass renegade who makes his own rules. But Sam is all about how the rules are there for a REASON, let's all follow hte rules, yay! Which is such a... like, a non-American (from my POV, anyway) concept? and I'm really interested in how they've carried that over, and how the different inluences have affected the show in terms of American 1970's buddy-cop series versus British ones.
I have a feeling that was really incoherent, and halfway through writing the paragraph I got this SUDDEN STABBING HEADACHE which is mostly gone now, but if reading it does the same to you, I'm sorry.
Other suggestions! Um, I would absolutely love to read FFVIII stuff written by you! Like, say, something pre-game involving training missions or just everyday life at garden? With any characters you feel like writing?
And of course you can ignore my suggestions if you feel like it, I won't mind! I know writing requests (especially vague ones) can be really tough. (And if you're ever randomly like, 'Hey Baco here is something you should write!' I am totally okay with that, because I'm always weirdly flattered when people make writing requests.)
If you're looking for some quirky, retro wallpapers, I love poking around Plan 59 (http://www.plan59.com/). I used to have this pic (http://www.plan59.com/cars/cars166.htm) as my wallpaper, but I lost it when my computer crashed and I haven't replaced it. UNTIL NOW. Though I'm thinking i might go looking for a Yotsuba wallpaper. Hmmm.
ALSO I am still working on your letter, because this week turned out to be crazy and full of tests.

Yay! I will add those to my list of prompts to poke around with! (I am possibly the worst prompt giver in all of existence, because I am awful at coming up with non-original universes related ideas, but because I am awful at coming up with anything on my own, those should be enough for me to try and build something off of. I can build off things decently enough, I think?) I am afraid if I ever try to write Gene Hunt that he will somehow kill my mind, though. Awesome! Brain death!
And! The remake! I watched the first three and a half episodes but I've stopped tuning in (I think I made a whiny post about it, haha. It was too annoying to me to watch it and then not have anyone to talk to about it and how it worked or didn't). It copies a lot (dialogue , camera angles) straight from the original, and that... doesn't work. When it isn't trying desperately to be 'the original show but with ~~AMERICAN ACCENTS~~' then I actually kind of enjoyed it, but it spends entirely too much time copying and not enough time showing me that it stands on its own merits. The guy playing Sam doesn't play Simm's Sam very well (ditto - more so, actually - for Gene), and he - I don't know how to word this so it makes more sense, all I can think is, he doesn't look right, he doesn't look like I think Sam Tyler should look, but he does look like your standard American cop, so... (he's tall and big and full of muscle and stuff, and in the first part of the first episode, seemed more like one of the guys who did less of the thinking and more just kind of following without questioning that much and I'm not saying this right but does that even make sense? I CAN'T TELL) Anyway, so when they try to make him be Simm's Sam, it just feels flat (to me). Also, I remember thinking Sam had a better, or at least more interesting, dynamic with Ray than with Gene, which was... really weird. Apparently people who haven't seen the original seem to mostly really like it, though, so what do I know. (It does kind of seem like a non-American concept to me, too, actually.) OH GOD THIS PARAGRAPH GOT REALLY LONG AND NONSENSICAL SOMEHOW.
That is a really neat site! I am totally stealing some of those to put into my wallpaper shuffler. Thanks! :D
