More Friday comic-pickups
I, again, grabbed the newest issue of Beast Wars: The Ascending, and, again, am not entirely sure why. I haven't read it yet. It'll have to wait, because I also got the one I drove into town for.
Complaint:
This issue was entirely too short.
Anyway, though.
Dealer (Double Dealer, really) wants to come to Earth. NOTHING GOOD WILL COME OF THIS.Rodimus Hot Rod, don't listen to him. (And, I am sorry, but I am apparently still calling you Rodimus in my head.)
For some reason, it really struck me in this issue that he (Hot Rod) looks a lot like his Alternators toy - especially his torso and shoulder areas. Is that new? He didn't have an Earth-based alt-mode in Escalation, and I don't remember if we saw him transform last issue.
But, yeah, he and Wheeljack are about where we left them - about to drive into an ambush while on their way to fetch Ironhide. Cue attack of Sunstreaker-look-alikes army.
We get to Wheeljack do some stunts! Not many or anything, but considering how long that little detail's been in his profile (which is to say, what, as long as the character's been around?) and how often we've seen anything done with it (which ranks in at around never), it was pretty awesome.
I also got a bit of a kick out of how initially he was all for caution, and then he took over with dangerous stunts. We got a nice little bit of development for both Wheeljack andRo- Hot Rod. Hot Rod had a Spotlight issue dedicated to him, so he didn't need it nearly as much as 'Jack did, but I like Hot Rod and so am always glad to see more of him. (But we really need more Wheeljack. He keeps getting ignored, which makes me sad. I like Wheeljack! ...this is the point when someone speaks up to remind me that I like everyone and so my proclaiming we should see more of a character "because I like him" is an even worse argument than it would be in general.)
MEANWHILE, aboard the Ark-19 as it plummets to the ground...
Prime takes over control. Poor Prowl, that's a bit of a blow, isn't it? You're just not that great at thinking on your feet, there.
On pages 8 and 9 (I believe? The two pages with the Ark-19 just missing plowing into the ground), there are two things I found incredibly amusing. On the first of the two pages, in the bottom panel in the lower left, there are two cars being tossed into the air. The one to the right looks like Movie Bumblebee.
On the other page, in the top panel, in the lower right corner, there is a newspaper. The headline reads: "PROJECT ICEM-." I'm assuming it says "iceman," and, of course, Project Iceman was the whole thing relating to Megatron in the movie. Hee!
Ratchet and the two (remaining) humans are ejected in an escape pod and so on their own again, only now Megatron's sent Sixshot after them. Eek! Get out of there, guys!
The other Autobots (I think it's down to Bumblebee, Hardhead, Nightbeat, Jazz, Prowl, and Prime now?) appear to still be on it when they activate the auto-destruct. Sixshot reports no survivors (aside from the escape pod), but what does he know?
Finally, at the end, we go to Tampa, Florida, to learn that the Machination has suppressed Hunter's mind, or at least they'd like to think they have.
The kid used a "mantra of useless trivia to resist the drugs and hypnosis," which is awesome. Hooray, Hunter! Now he sneaks off to look around the base he's in - while wearing some weird sort of suit that has what are clearly bits of Sunstreaker-head (well, not direct bits. Copies of bits) attached to it.
Cut back to 'Jack and Hot Rod, they've managed to lose a few of the copies, but the others pull after them. They transform and pull out their weapons, and one of the copies also transforms.
Then it removes its head, which turns into a human wearing a suit identical to Hunter's. KILL HIM, GUYS. gaaah!
Another dramatic scene-cut back to Hunter, who has found the gruesome and disturbing site of Sunny's (the real Sunny!) head, sans some external plating and with several wires connecting him to - something. And with Sunstreaker's plea for Hunter to kill him, THEY CUT US OFF. AUGH. STOP DOING THAT.
And, ugh, I cannot get the image of Sunstreaker out of my mind. That was really ... poor guy! That's so awful. Ugh. Someone get him out of there!
fdshjkdg now I need issue 3. Wow. Infiltration and Escalation never saw me this eager for the next issue.
