Thunderbolt and Lightning

STORMS! We nearly lost power at work - a few seconds in blackout, but then it came back before the backup generators kicked in. Though, heh. Half the lights in produce refused to come back on and the small oven in the deli all but literally exploded. They had to cut the power to it because it was overheating so badly. And then I had to go outside in the rain and the thunder and the lightning! It is kind of awesome but also terrifying to be walking along and see a bolt of lightning that spreads literally the entire length of the sky.

30 Days of Video Games

Day 17 - Favourite antagonist.

Maaan, you know I hate favourites! Why d'you gotta keep asking 'em?

Actually, I'm going to answer this question, even if it is not entirely an accurate answer. I am reasonably certain this character is not really my favouritest antagonist. I have no idea who that would be and am sick of dwelling on it trying to come up with an answer. I mean, there are the antagonists I find totally interesting (most of the Final Fantasy ones), and the antagonists that I love to hate (most of Jak's), the antagonists I am always happy to see, even though they can be really annoying (HI KNUCKLES STOP MESSING UP MY LIFE dropping away the bridge, turning off the power, knocking us into a lava pit…)…

Favourite villain would be a little easier (or it would at least shorten the list…). Maybe that is how they mean this question (and, hey, the villain is always your antagonist). But that is not how they worded it, so it is not how I am answering it.

SO, OKAY! Even though he is not really my favourite antagonist, this guy does have the honour of being probably the only one I like more and find more interesting than the main protagonist.

Yeah, that's right.

I'm going with the thong-wearing, fairly androgynous Kuja from Final Fantasy IX.

(WHO SAY THAT COMING. RAISE YOUR HAND.

WHAT, NO ONE?

…YEAH, THOUGHT SO.)

Actually, the sad thing is, I can't really give you a detailed reasoning for why I picked Kuja, here. My memory of FFIX is really, really spotty, and I've been avoiding reading up on it because I'd really like to replay it, and wouldn't it be more fun to replay it without knowing everything that's going to happen? But I do remember that Zidane kind of annoyed me (a lot. At least part of it was all the flirty-ness) – it wasn't because he was cheerful, I have no problems with cheerful protagonists – and that I was mostly just really confused by Kuja for the first half of the game, then found him kind of entertaining, and then after we went to…. Terra? Terra was the other planet, right, and we started on Gaia? I think that's right? – anyway, after you go meet Garland and he talks a lot and Zidane gets all emo about s-ssssomething(?) and then gets better and STUFF HAPPENS? (One of my strongest memories from this time is that of being absolutely terrified of running into Malboros, because the damn things were nightmares in VIII AND NOW THEY COULD FLY and how is that at all fair? And that that is one of my strongest memories should tell you a lot about how much I remember of IX.) And then Kuja shows up and EXPOSITION HAPPENS and then he nukes the planet because GOD DAMN IT WHAT DO YOU MEAN I'M MORTAL? Or something like that. ANYWAY, I just remember that I found him and his story to be a bit more interesting character than Zidane's (you know, the guy I was running around as? The main character?).

Also (if I remember correctly), he did a lot of behind-the-scenes manipulating of other characters in the story (like Queen Brahne) which was pretty cool. Also? Awesome silver dragon.

…I should really bump IX up on the priorities list. Then I can answer this with something beyond, "'cause I remember thinking that he was interesting and that I liked his character and that I think I felt bad for him BUT I CANNOT TELL YOU WHY FOR ANY OF THESE THINGS."

(Also, I like to pretend he does not die at the end. They never explicitly say one way or the other, so I am totally not even rewriting canon!)

I got my hair cut (again) recently, and I am alternating between liking it a lot and hating it a lot.

Anyway, back to sky-watching.

Wait, what, Malboros can fly in IX? They can fly? How can I not remember this?

But I highly recommend replaying IX, because it is really, really good. It's probably in my top two Final Fantasy games; the cast isn't one of my favourites, but it's so much fun to play. Which is a bit weird, given how incredibly depressing the storyline is.

And I liked Kuja a lot as well! (Although I also liked Zidane.)

Perhaps it was simply too horrifying to remember! (FFIX starts at around 3:20. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FxwGUanzBk))

Square has mastered the art of making depressing storylines really fun to play, I think. But, okay! Maybe I will be able to get to it after Birth by Sleep (which is currently up next after Dissidia 012). ... Hopefully the PS2 is up and running again by then.

I hope that I appreciate Zidane more on a replay. I (sort of) know what to expect from him now, and I've got a bit more experience with RPGs, so some of his antics shouldn't be quite as off-putting. And he hasn't bothered me in Dissidia, at least (well, not since I got used to his voice. It threw me at first, but now I find it works just fine).
