30 Days of Video Games

Day 01 - Your very first video game
On a console? Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Sega Genesis at a then-sort-of-friend's house. And, actually, I'm not sure I even played it that much or if I mostly watched (or maybe I controlled Tails, if she had two controllers?), but either way I went home and immediately went about talking my brother into pooling our $2 weekly allowances until we were able to afford our own copy of the system and game (which, since we both purchased it, is why I did not answer the first day with Sonic 2). Our parents were impressed with our determination, so they actually purchased the TV we used (it arrived before the system, haha). And when we finally were able to buy it, we played Sonic 2 SO DAMN MUCH that TO THIS DAY, I can play half the levels without ever thinking about it (practically without looking, haha. Heck, I can actually do the special stages by sound alone. I tend not to, though, because playing video games with your eyes closed is just too damn weird). (I HAVE SO MANY STORIES OF MY BROTHER AND I PLAYING THIS GAME)

(ALSO WE REALLY SUCKED FOR THE LONGEST TIME, haha)

… oh what the hell, I can throw in a few short memories. YOU CAN SCROLL PAST IF YOU'RE NOT INTERESTED.

So, hah, we couldn't beat Casino Night Zone (the fourth stage) for the longest time. Because, you know, there are flippers everywhere? Including in the boss room (that's a fairly close example to how we went about it... aside from the winning at the end part XD)? We, for whatever reason, thought we had to use them in the fight. So we'd launch ourselves up to the top of the room and bounce around up there, then finally come crashing down and, of course, if we did ever hit Robotnik it was completely by accident, and he always either succeeded in killing us or we'd run out of time. So we got really, really good at the first three levels (well, first four, with the exception of Robotnik) (we even found the shortcut in Chemical Plant and stopped getting stuck racing the air timer! WE WERE SO PROUD and have never once since then used the lower route to the boss). And then, finally, finally, we beat Robotnik! OH MY GOSH! A NEW LEVEL! OH MY GOOOOSH!! … but our time was up! Noooo! So we had to pause and go away.

And, okay, I do not know what happened. Maybe we didn't actually pause (this seems unlikely)? Maybe there was a power flicker. I DO NOT KNOW. Whatever it was, when we came back later, the system was at the title screen. NOOOOOO. We were devastated!

But then we managed to beat him again, and then at some point we figured out we didn't have to use the pinball flippers and it got way easier.

AND THEN, hahaha, the first time we got to Mystic Cave, wtf, we got scared by the music (at around 40 seconds? We were like OH NO A GHOST SOUND IT'S SO SCARY) and had to run downstairs. (Though the music for the two-player versus mode is just awesome.) And then we were stuck on Metropolis for ages, though I don't remember how or why. Maybe we kept getting lost.

And the final stage, Death Egg Zone, my brother could never beat it! So I beat the game a bunch of times (oh, man, Metal Sonic killed me so much, and then I had to go fight Robotnik in a giant egg-suit! AND IT TOOK MORE THAN 8 HITS WHAT IS THIS MADDESS?? We thought we'd never see the end!) and then Sonic 3 came out and then Sonic and Knuckles came out, and S&K had that lock-on feature, right? And one of the things you could do was lock the Sonic 2 cartridge in and play through the game as Knuckles. Well, Knuckles can't jump as high as Sonic, so in some ways the game was harder, but the special stages required less ring-gathering (I… think? It might've just been because it was single player. I know if you played Sonic 2 as just Sonic or Tails, the ring requirements were less, too, but it felt like they were bizarrely low as Knuckles. WE COULD BEAT "THE PUMPKIN ONE" ON THE FIRST GO! Whereas before we always needed to get the other person to man Tails, because it is SO FREAKING IMPOSSIBLE or at least hard otherwise, multiplayer makes you get 200 by the end. Which is very challenging when you are like 8 years old and really suck at video games), so in some ways it was a little easier. But it wasn’t until he played through as Knuckles that my brother finally beat Sonic 2. THAT IS YEARS OF TRYING TO BEAT A VIDEO GAME.

(RULES OF SPECIAL STAGE: IF THERE IS A RINGS SPLIT, JECCA ALWAYS TAKES THE LEFT WALL AND HER BROTHER ALWAYS TAKES THE RIGHT. SONIC COLLECTS THE EMERALD AT THE END GDI TAILS STOP JUMPING IN FRONT. ALSO, YOU MUST BE ALIGNED IN THE CENTER OF THE TRACK AT THE END.)

Also we'd play the two-player versus thing and pop teleporter boxes on each other if we fell too far behind. Popping one right as the other guy was about to cross the finish line = BEST (AND MOST EVIL). (Unless you're the person being swapped, in which case violence is permissible.)

… also we eventually got good enough at this stupid game to be able to have all 7 Chaos Emeralds before the boss in the first stage. (There are enough starposts, you just have to hit them in a specific order.) (And speaking of Chaos Emeralds, we somehow did not connect "Chaos Emeralds" with the word "chaos" and mispronounced it, for an embarrassingly long time, with a "ch" instead of a "k" sound.)

(... I still have not really shaken called Knuckles an echidna-with-a-ch. If I am referring to the animal, I pronounce it properly. My theory is that, since Knuckles looks absolutely nothing like an echidna, my brain refuses to catch up. SO "KNUCKLES THE ECHIDNA-with-a-ch" HE REMAINS.)

OTHER RANDOM THING: my brother once beat the first level in 9 seconds. WE'RE STILL NOT SURE HOW.

Oh, what a long, dark road you set me on, Sonic 2. (Also looking up all these videos is reminding me how TOTALLY AWESOME the soundtrack to that game was. ♥ WHY NO SOUNDTRACK, SEGA? I could probably find it online if I went looking.)

…If you didn't mean on a console, then it was almost undoubtedly Pong on the old DOS machine we had when I was little.

Two days off in a row now! Yaaay! Hopefully I actually do that stuff that needs to get done instead of procrastinating. (My "to do" list is short, but it is composed entirely of things I do not want to do at all.)

I love old videogame-playing stories! Sorry for laughing at your unnecessarily-convoluted-Robotnik-fighting pain. Also at your pronunciation of 'Chaos Emerald', ahahahaha. I can't guarantee that I didn't do that as well.)

We used to have Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Master System. I was actually too afraid to play the games myself, because I didn't want to kill Sonic, but I'd beg my brother to play them so I could watch. There were so many crazy glitches in those games. I think we had a beating-the-first-level-in-a-matter-of-seconds instance on Sonic the Hedgehog, too; Sonic ran straight off the screen, the camera panned through the entire level in an attempt to catch up, and finally it found him at the finishing post.

It took us freaking forever (I mean, seriously, months, possibly years) to get through the first act of the Sky High zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (which I don't think was the same as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Genesis, confusingly; I seem to remember that Tails had been kidnapped and wasn't present during gameplay), because we couldn't work out how to operate the hang gliders at all. And once Sonic turned invisible in the Sky High zone and started flying through the clouds, going by the camera movement, and collecting rings that were apparently hidden behind the clouds until he was eventually killed by invisible enemies. It was odd.

The convoluted strategy is funny! ...In retrospect, anyway.

I've never played the Master System versions (though I think the first game is on the PS2's Mega Collection Plus), but I am not surprised they were glitchy, as well! Did it ever get stuck just panning around the level? I can't remember if we got out of that by timing out or if Sonic would somehow get himself killed. (And once, in multi-player, we somehow triggered UNENDING TELEPORTATION, which was headache-inducing ).

And, wow, I just looked up a summary of that Sonic 2 and it is completely different. That is so weird! In the Genesis version, Tails spends most of the entire game following you around and there's never hang gliding. The closest to that is the third-to-last level (Sky Chase), which is dedicated to riding around on top of the biplane.
