I don't even know why this annoys me so much.
But it does. I'm going to rage momentarily about fandom and the people in said fandom, and some opinions on pairings (well, pairing) and... just... raaage.
Before we start, however: I am, for the most part, an equal-opportunity 'shipper. I'll try anything at least once, and I have a very, very small number of pairings I actually honestly ship. Even counting all of my fandoms together, the total only comes to something between ten and twenty. Most of them are canon. No, I'm not telling you what they are here, because that's not the matter at hand, and I'm not about to disqualify my rantings by listing off a pairing someone somewhere disapproves of (and I know at least one of my canon pairings is hated by a large amount of people). I'll let the actual rant disqualify itself, thank you.
(So if you'd ever wondered why Jecca so rarely talks about her pairings, even though she's very clearly deeply entrenched in fandoms? It's because she knows some of them are wildly unpopular and she has no desire to give Those People reasons to suspect she's one of those "demented fanbrats." Though if you're going to discredit her solely for her being able to acknowledge any sort of merit in something, canon or not, she probably doesn't want to associate with you, either.)
Despite being fairly easy-going about it all, though, there are some pairings I do not like! Some of these are also canon. Some of them are not. Some of them are fairly widespread. Sometimes it irritates me that something I dislike is so widespread, but I get over it fairly quickly.
But, anyway. I am sick to death of the Transformers fanbase holding up the Prowl/Jazz fan-pairing as an example of all that is Bad and Wrong and Out Of Character with fanfic everywhere. Honestly.
Yes, I know, it's popular, and it's bloody everywhere. Yes, I know that the very, VERY vast majority of it is hideously out of character, and yes, I know, it's a bit bizarre on account of their hugely different personalities, and, yes, the people who honestly think it's canon confuse the hell out of me, too. Believe me, I'm well aware. The fandom is full of lunatics, and many of them ship Prowl/Jazz. I'm not saying any of those complaints are unfounded.
But, look, okay? There are a lot of implausible and stupid and senseless pairings being written in the fandom. I probably don't have to list them here, you've probably encountered more than your fair share of them. So why is it always the same pairing that's held up, time after time, as the one full of Idiots Who Fail?
I'm sure there are plenty of normal, sane, smart people who can write well who like the pairing. They're probably also aware of the lunacy some of the other fans exhibit. And I'm probably just overreacting tonight because I'm feeling a bit strained from the drama of saying goodbye to my chocobo this afternoon, WHICH IS ONLY THE LAMEST EXCUSE EVER.
BUT EVERY. FREAKING. TIME. that the subject of implausible pairings in the fandom comes up (even if we're talking about a completely different continuity), half the people present immediately start in on the, "yeah, and don't forget about Prowl/Jazz, 'cause it sucks and squicks me out and it's totally OOC!" Okay. We get it. You don't like it. You don't need to tell us again.
And I'm so sick of seeing it come up! Find a different pairing to hate on for a while, I don't know. Maybe if it didn't come up every single time, regardless of the original subject, I'd be less annoyed by it? I'm doing a pretty poor job of articulating how much this annoys me and why. Largely because, as the subject line implies, I have no idea why this aggravates me as much as it does.
Probably doesn't help that I'm fairly forgiving in terms of Stupid Fanfic. Oh, sure, I'm fully aware of identifying something as awful, but if it bothers me that much, I wander off and forget about it. (I'm not saying everyone should be forced to do that, by the way.) And I tend to not publicly vent when a certain pairing has finally grated on my last bit of tolerance, because I'm sure there are sane people out there who like whatever I'm feeling annoyed with, and I don't want to hurt their feelings, ignore that there is a very good chance none of them would ever see the entry.
BUT SERIOUSLY, YOU'RE MAKING MY BRAIN WANT TO START OTP-SHIPPING IT OUT OF SPITE, AND YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW ANNOYING THAT IS. I DON'T LIKE OTP-SHIPPING.
And of course I will never say this anywhere else, because I'm desperately afraid that I'd be lumped into the Lunatic Fan Who Ships Stupid Pairings (regardless of whether or not I actually ship them!) group, and I think I'm just going to shut up now because I've probably convinced everyone I'm a lunatic, anyway.
EDIT TO ADD:
Maybe it's like this: you know how, for the longest time (until someone called everyone else out on it), whenever a Transformers-fandom-related oddity turned up ANYWHERE, regardless of context, it always came down to, "lol wait ppl write robots having sexxors? how and why" and we all found it really, really annoying, because, yes, some people do, and get over it already? MAYBE IT'S JUST SOMETHING LIKE THAT, I DON'T KNOW.
Also, holy crap, it's Transformers, almost ALL pairings are fairly ridiculous and without much, if any, basis in canon.
ALSO, this isn't anything to do with the actual pairing. If everyone was always popping up going, "Yeah, wtf is up with all the Warpath/Sunstreaker (OR WHOEVER) shippers?" I would still be just as annoyed.
