... Interesting. I've just discovered, entirely by accident, that my external hard drive and my oldest mp3 player can share a USB cord. Now I wonder which this one originally belonged to...
Guys, I am completely running out of entry titles. TONIGHT'S IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY WHAT MY ROOMMATE MADE FOR HER DINNER. (She let me try some. Surprisingly delicious!) Posting an entry every day when nothing of note happens is haaard.
30 Days of Video Games
Day 18 - Favourite protagonist.
…… uuugh. I was able to cheat around actually answering yesterday, but I am not coming up with a reasonable work-around for this one. Fuck. Though I was going to interpret "protagonist" to mean the main protagonist only rather than ANY PROTAGONIST IN ANY GAME (because any excuse to narrow these lists would be a good one). Except that did not really help entirely as much as I'd have liked, because I am still incapable of picking one over the others.
ugh. Sorry. I suck. @_@
OH WAIT NO I'VE GOT SOMETHING. HAHAHA I had the cursor over the post button and then this occurred to meeee. So, again, I definitely cannot actually say this character is my favourite protagonist, but he is the one that sneaked up on me something fierce. That is not to say I did not initially really like this character! Because I did! But I also ... I don't know, I don't know how to say how I mean it. I liked the character, but I liked most of the rest of the cast better. I kind of want to say I did not "get" him, but I did understand his whole character arc and all, I just... I guess maybe I just felt awkward saying I liked him because we didn't really see much of him for most all of the game. Sure, it came through, but it still... wasn't? I DON'T KNOW WHAT I AM SAYING. (Neither does anyone else!)
ALSO I BET YOU'D LIKE ME TO TELL YOU WHO I'M TALKING ABOUT SOMETIME, HUH? hahaha whoops.

Surprising? Not sure.
Also, I'm lazy and just using Google search today, and apparently it's harder than I'd thought it would be to find pictures of FFVII Cloud.
But, man! Yeah! When I played VII, I mean, hey, sure, this Cloud guy, he is pretty cool most of the time. Sometimes he is also a jerk, though, that's kind of a bummer. And there's something kinda weird (progressively weirder!) about him, but whatever. AND THEN DISC 2 IS LIKE WTF IS GOING ON, HE'S NOT REAL? WHAT. WHAT? WAIT? WHO IS THIS IMPOSTER (Firefox, how the hell do you not know that to be a word?) WITH THE BLACK HAIR. GET OUT OF HERE, SEPHIROTH. CONFUSION!!! Except he totally was real, so there, but that doesn't really make up for the fact that for the first, half (or so) of the game, you are less watching and playing as Cloud and more dealing with Cloud's confused brain trying to act like a SOLDIER 1st would mixed with his memories of Zack. And then he goes away and you don't actually deal with Cloud until later, still, after taking a dive in the Lifestream (grah). And so I wasn't entirely sure where I stood with him. Also, his characterisation in the fandom was just damned bizarre back then (it probably still is, to be fair), so I didn't really get anything from there, either. (I was also not in a good place at the time to deal with someone with the issues Cloud had, so I suspect there was a bit of backlash on account of that. Not enough to make me dislike him, just enough for me to sort of draw away from his character.)
And yet, somehow between whenever I beat FFVII and the release of Advent Children, he grew on me. WHILE I WAS NOT LOOKING. What a little sneak. I do not think his cameo in Kingdom Hearts had much to do with it (though I was way more gleeful to see him than I'd have thought I'd've been), and I've never played Tactics, so obviously that was no influence at all. Really, I never gave it much thought until literally the night before Advent Children's release, when out of freaking nowhere I had the thought, 'what if they kill Cloud? They wouldn't possibly. Would they? Holy shit, I can't deal with this.' AND THEN I DIDN'T SLEEP. And was also beyond confused as to why I was so deeply upset by the idea. (I didn't see it for a few... days? Weeks? Someone I knew got their hands on a subbed copy and we all piled into their dorm room to watch, and, haha, oh, my god, my heart damn near stopped when he was shot near the end. If I'd been watching it on my own, I'd probably have had to pause it and collect myself, but obviously that wasn't an option, so I had to just not freak out and, hey, it all worked out okay! But still, geez, I'd kind of thought "heart in your throat" was just an expression before that, haha.) And then he is okay, and that was just... I don't know, that was very important to me. Advent Children does not always make a lot of sense, but I find the ending of it to be very emotionally powerful, and so I am willing to forgive most all of its problems to get there.
And now he has possibly got the longest arc of any Final Fantasy character?
I mean, excluding flashbacks, we see him go from this dorky (and ridiculously adorable) kid:

...to this mess:

...to this wreck:

...to this guy (this is Dirge-Cloud, by the way, I know the outfit is the same as AC), who is a heck of a lot better off (happy Cloud! yay!):

I mean, that is a span of ten years (because he is fourteen when you first meet him in Crisis Core, and then he is up to twenty-four by the time Dirge of Cerberus rolls around).
NO WONDER HE GREW ON ME. PLENTY OF TIME FOR IT.
(... ignore that he grew on me before most of those ten years were put together in readily viewable/playable form.)
So, uh. There is something, anyway. Not favourite protagonist, but very possibly the one that crept up on me the most.
Next couple days look to be much easier. Thank god. I need a break from these impossible ones. XD
Got the writing bug / no short story ideas / still stuck on all the WIPs dilemma again. I hate my brain.
