jecca_mehlota: (Are you for real?)

It's been snowing again.

Spent all yesterday afternoon and evening wondering what I should make for dinner tonight. Then, this afternoon, Mom and I ran around and did stuff and got lunch and I left with leftovers. After lunch, we went to the grocery store to pick up a few things and I went back to wondering what was for dinner. Dumb.

30 Days of Video Games

Day 12 - A game everyone should play.

Ecco!Final Fantasy [anything]! …… Crisis Core? …. hard. D:

Actually, hilariously, my mother brought up the subject of video games and the playing thereof yesterday, and it is some of what she said that is pointing me towards my eventual answer.

I mean, there are a lot of really fantastic games out there, and several that I think everyone should play (including, of course, the ones mentioned above). However, despite how wonderful(ly frustrating…) they are, well… For example, it would be unkind of me to insist everyone play a Final Fantasy game, because some people really hate the style of JRPGs. I think it would suck if someone told me everyone had to play Halo! (I am fantastically terrible at first-person games, especially shooters, and there will actually be a little more on that in an upcoming day.)

So, for my answer, I am actually going to pick Portal! …Which is of course, a first-person game but bear with me.

I chose this game for a couple reasons! The first, of course, is that it is super fun. But there are others! It is also hilarious (which most people know, or at least think they know, what with how popular "the cake is a lie" has become. But wouldn't it be nice to understand all the memes?). It is surprisingly approachable! As I said above, I, as a general rule, suck at first-person POV games. But I was able to play Portal! The game introduces you to pretty much everything you'll need to get through it all in an effective manner, so when the prompting stops, you still have a good idea of what is going on. It is not hugely dependant on your ability to react quickly to things! It is a puzzle game! When you encounter a problem, there is a solution! It is not just there to stop you or screw you up or just really piss you off. It is not really a matter of getting lucky or being a high enough level, or a good enough button masher, or anything. You (usually) have plenty of time to figure out exactly what the problem is and how you can get through whatever it is! And it is not super long! It is not going to require years of your life to complete it through 100% from start to finish!

It is recent enough that the graphics will not be terrible and so scare off people, too (though, okay, seriously you people like that, graphics do not a game make. LOOK AT WHAT HAS HAPPENED WITH FFXIV)! And you do not need to be familiar with the story of Half Life to understand Portal, despite their taking place in the same world, which adds another nice little bit of approachability to it.

So, it is fun and funny, it makes you think but does not require you to be a super genius, it does not rely on super-speedy reactions, and it is challenging without being off-puttingly so. Almost anyone can play and enjoy it! It is a good introduction to games, if you need one, and it is just a damn good game if you already enjoy them.

Basically: MY MOTHER PLAYS PORTAL YOU REALLY DON'T HAVE AN EXCUSE.

...This is kind of a stupid answer, isn't it.

Have set up a table to put my laptop on. Room is still a work in progress, but this is at least a minor improvement. Unfortunately, table squeaks.

In a Mood. Cause unknown. Assuming it is Life In General. Or possibly the weather. Both?
