Caring for Neglected Chocobos
My brother, as you may recall, started raising a second chocobo, this one named StormTrooper, shortly after I started raising Agate.
He got sick of caring for ST quite a while ago, and so has been cruelly ignoring him since. As such, ST has been reduced to a twitching ball of unloved woe. I had no idea how long it had been, but I learned that he wouldn't care either way if I logged into his account to fix his chocobo and then retire it.
Starting:
I've been warned that the sight I now march forward to witness will probably break my feeble little heart, but it is a price I am willing to pay to save the poor chocobo from its misery. I have a good start, anyway: I haven't used the two gregarious worms Agate found recently, so I can send those to Nabiki to boost ST back on track.
It will cost me a minimum of 119 gil a day to care for this chocobo until it is happy and healthy again. If it is ill or something else, it will be more. I have to keep track so I can pay Nabiki back for the cost of caring for her chocobo. I also need to walk her to San d'Oria, and then back to Windurst or Whitegate when I'm done, every day.
So. Here we go!
Hantileon is gonna kick my (well, Nabiki's) tail for neglecting her chocobo so long.
She last checked on StormTrooper on day 68, so Hantileon's report starts on day 69. Every day will be basic care, as Nabiki has not set any care options.
Against my better judgment and my brother's recommendations, I'll be going with detailed reports until I catch up to the present day with this bird.
... Oh, this is a pretty bird. He's got longer tailfeathers than most chocobos. And big feet. Clomp-clomp.
Day 69:
ST no longer seems lonely.
Hantileon says, "...Oho you are not afraid that it has stopped caring about you, are you? I am not sure what to say to that!" Neither am I!
Day 70:
ST seems lonely. You should venture out together sometime. ST was acting spoiled today, as well.
OOOH LONELY CHOCOBO IS THE SADDEST THING EVER. OH GOD THIS WAS A BAD IDEA.
Day 71:
They disciplined ST and he was behaving
Day 72:
Not lonely.
Bored and restless.
--Reselect detailed report--
Day 73:
YOU GUYS SERIOUSLY. LONELY CHOCOBO IS BREAKING MY HEART. *sobs* I'M NOT JOKING. MY EYES ARE WELLING UP.
Day 74:
No longer lonely.
Excess energy ST apparently had is gone.
Day 75:
*SOBS*
OH AND HE'S SICK, TOO.
But somehow he has more zest for life. Possibly trying to spite Nabiki?
Day 76:
Bored
--Reselect detailed reports--
Day 77:
No longer lonely, and the illness has completely healed.
Still in possession of life-zest.
Day 78:
T_______T
He's also bored.
Day 79:
Spoiled
Day 80:
Ill again.
--Reselect detailed report--
Day 81:
No longer seems lonely.
Day 82:
THIS IS TOO AWFUL.
Illness has healed, at least.
Day 83:
No longer seems lonely again.
Day 84:
Lonely again. T_T
IT'S OKAY, ST. I'M GONNA MAKE NABIKI TAKE CARE OF YOU AGAIN. Don't cry!
More responsive.
--Reselect detailed report. This should be the last time I need to. Agate's on day 91, and ST was only a few days behind her, so he should be at 89...--
Day 85-86:
Oh, yeah, seems so. Two days in one report.
No longer seems lonely.
He's bored.
Day 87-88:
Lonely again. There are not any words for how heartbreaking that is to look at.
Day 89:
Bored.
...and, yeah! We're at feeding time now!
OH GOD, ST. DX
He's all huddled up in the back of his stall, miserable and sad.
Regarding affection: It seems to not care about you at all.
Your chocobo is not receiving enough affection, and seems very depressed. You should pay more attention to your animal.
But he is a very patient chocobo (making him ideal for carrying goods!). I guess all this waiting around for Nabiki to come back has been good for something. (Actually, it's because my brother had him carry packages for a while...It destroys your affection levels, but it quickly builds strength and endurance, and nets you some gil.)
He's bored, so I'm going to have him race first, and then see how much energy he has left. Come on, poor baby. Let's get you some exercise.
Ooh, good boy! ^_^ And for that, we learned the story of a happy chocobo, so ST hasn't been racing (or at least not winning) much at all.
Next, I took him on a short walk into Ronfaure. And despite the ages of neglect, he still found a goblin mask for her.
... watching over this poor thing is just heartbreaking. T__T He's so sad.
It cost 11 gil to put the mask on the Auction House, but if it sells(which seems likely) (and it did), it'll earn 1000, so I'm in the clear for chocobo-related costs at the moment.
Day 90:
SUCH A SORROWFUL LITTLE CHOCOBO.
Actually, he no longer seems lonely today. Instead, he is spoiled...
I can't believe I have to make Nabiki scold this thing. It feels bad enough as it is! Oh...! Poor, quivering mess. :(
We met Brutus and a chocobo that was not Brilliant. This chocobo's name is Fantastic. ST got along with Fantastic. (And Brutus apparently watches New Who and names his chocobos after the Doctor's catchphrases? ... yes, I know, other people use them too, but that's what I thought of immediately.)
After the scolding and the walk to Jugner, I spent the rest of the time making Nabiki watch over him. I know I said I had some gregarious worms to use on him, but I think I'm actually going to work him back up, instead of just forcing him to like her. It'll take longer, but I'll feel better about it.
Tomorrow he'll actually get to do something, since I set up a care schedule for him. He's been getting nothing but basic care for at least a month (Earth time) at this point.
Day 91:
ST still doesn't like Nabiki, but at least he's looking a lot better. Today he was even happy to see her. Yay! (I'm so glad to see him happier!) She took him on a walk to Jugner, and he found a silver beastcoin for her, then we spent the rest of the time watching over him.
Oh! Yay! After today's work, ST "seems able to endure your [Nabiki's] company"! Progress!
Day 92:
Oooh, poor baby's feeling lonely again. ;__;
I had Nabiki take him out to Jugner again and then, again, spend the rest of the time watching over him. He found a bag of wildgrass seeds for her. Poor thing just wants to be loved. Nothing, real or fictional, deserves to be neglected for so long.
Day 93:
Lonely and depressed chocobo is looooonely. And depressed. T__T
In Jugner, Pulonono taught Nabiki the story of a youthful chocobo. After a walk in Jugner and Ronfaure, as well as a bit of time spent watching over ST, he seems to slightly enjoy Nabiki's company.
Day 94:
He doesn't feel lonely anymore! Though now he is acting spoiled.
Ah! ST seems to slightly enjoy Nabiki's company! He found an olive flower for her while we were out in Jugner.
Day 95:
Being sick of teleporting to La Theine and then walking, I splurged on an airship ride, so today's cost comes to 319 gil. Pulonono and Melody (augh, different names confuse me!) were in Jugner, and ST found a Ronfaure chestnut in Ronfaure.
Day 96 - Day 98:
Nabiki's been logging off in obscure places and asking me not to move her, so ST was, unfortunately, ignored again. At least he had a care schedule set up this time. Fortunately, he doesn't seem to have minded too much.
Day 99:
Took him on two walks to Jugner and then watched over him a few times. He's looking happy to see Nabiki! And he seems to like being around her! Hooray!
Day 100:
He found a mythril beastcoin for Nabiki! The walk in Jugner tired him out a bit more than usual, so I spent more time watching over him that I have the last few days.
Day 101:
Windurst is so faaar from San d'Oria. But my brother told me I was allowed to spend his gil on chocobos, so. A bit less of a hassle. 238 gil.
Oooh, poor thing is ill! I was going to buy some Tokopekko wildgrass, since Nabiki doesn't have any in storage, but there wasn't any on the Auction House. So I raided my own stores. I dearly hope I don't regret that.
Pulonono and whatsitsface - Melody - in Jugner. He found a bronze axe in Ronfaure.
Day 102-103:
I THINK HE IS LOGGING OUT IN OBSCURE PLACES ON PURPOSE.
On day 102, ST was still sick. Apparently the lone clump of grass didn't help, and since I wasn't able to get on to check on him....! T__T Poor chocobo. Though, despite being very ill, he was also acting spoiled.
Thankfully, his fever went done by day 103, and they disciplined him in Nabiki's place, so he was also behaving again.
Day 104:
Today Nabiki was in Jeuno, so I airship'd her back to San d'Oria for 200 gil. I also sent her a cupid worm from Hisime, but I'm waiting to use it. It can hurt your chocobo's stats if your chocobo isn't perky or in high spirits, and ST isn't either of those today. (Agate is almost perpetually in a state of one or both...)
ST seems to like her pretty well!
Day 105:
StormTrooper's day resets at about 12:47 PM. NO I WASN'T CHECKING OBSESSIVELY TO FIND OUT WHEN I GOT THE NEW MESSAGE.
Today, he's full of physical energy! And he seems to like Nabiki a lot! We're so close! He's also in high spirits, but I didn't notice until after I'd fed him, so he's completely full and the cupid worm would be a waste. There's always tomorrow, though.
Day 106:
Today she was in Yhoator, next to the telepoint.
So I teleported to La Theine and... half the place didn't load properly, which led to a detour, as I went to investigate the odd scenery. (On a chocobo, which cost, I think, 348?)
(Here are images: one, two, three, four.)
Once in San d'Oria, Nabiki took ST on two walks to Jugner and then watched over him several times. ST seems to want to be with her all the time!
Day 107:
Missed again.
Day 108:
264 gil for a chocobo from Holla.
ST SEEMS TO REGARD NABIKI AS HIS PARENT! SUCCESS! SUCCEESSSSS! :D :D :D
I'm going to keep him on a few more days, then retire him.
Day 109:
Today, instead of wasting Nabiki's gil, I wasted her Allied Notes. I cast Recall-Jugner instead of Teleport-Holla and hiked to the Outpost, then warped back to town and walked to the maw.
ST was bored, so I had him race against the other chocobo. And he won! Then Nabiki took him on a walk to Jugner, where he found a gregarious worm! I'll be sure to feed it to him tomorrow.
Day 110:
I started crossing La Theine and then my computer decided it hated life and tried to destroy itself. Eventually I gave up on talking it out of suicide and knocked it out and waiting for it to stop having seizures. NOT AMUSED, LAPTOP. (Bad day for electronic devices for Jecca! Her mp3 player hates life today, too.) So I don't know how much the chocobo to town cost, because I had to force a power down.
ST has more zest for life nowadays. I feel a bit sad that I'll be retiring him tomorrow, even though I'm sure he won't mind. He'll never be sad and lonely and abandoned again! Because the stables crew take good care of chocobos.
Today he found Nabiki a piece of rotten meat. ... WHY DO CHOCOBOS FIND SUCH THINGS.
And then I walked Nabiki out to the outpost on the Beaucedine Glacier and logged her out, because if my brother's going to intentionally log himself out in bizarre places for me, I'm darn well going to return the favour.
Day 111:
240 for a chocobo from Holla. Only bought carrots today (29 each, so 58 total). I also registered ST to be the chocobo that responds when Nabiki uses her chocobo whistle, which costs 250 gil.
Storm Trooper is perky today, and unusually bright and focused! He and Nabiki went to Jugner and La Theine, and then he got a cupid worm.
And then I retired him!
... I AM GOING TO SOB PATHETICALLY WHEN IT IS TIME FOR AGATE TO GO. THAT WAS SUCH A CRUEL THING TO DO, THAT CUTSCENE. OMGGG DX
Here is most of it. It didn't fit in one recording (I only get thirty seconds through Fraps) and the other half is too large. It consists of Nabiki kneeling by ST's trough, apparently doing something - giving him food, maybe? - then she stands up and nods at him, and ST trills happily. Then we white-flash back to the present moment, with Nabiki staring at him still, and Hantileon says: Parting with your chocobo is difficult, is it not? But have no fear...you can see it again. Keep your chin up. StormTrooper will come to you whenever you call.
I can't believe I became so attached to a chocobo that wasn't even mine. Probably because he was so miserable at first. I'll miss him, even if I know my brother won't. (I told him the cutscene'd probably have been a lot more meaningful if he hadn't abandoned the poor thing and reduced it to fits in the corner of the stall.)
(And the question I am asking of myself is, why am I crying more these days? Seriously? For the last few months, I've been more prone to start leaking. It's weird and unsettling.
God, being emotionally invested in things is so hard! I remember now why I did not do it for so very long. Ugh. Ugh.)
And so ends my adventures of making Nabiki care for her chocobo!
HERE IS A HAPPY PICTURE OF THEM TOGETHER:

What Jecca has learned from this is to Never Abandon A Chocobo, EVER, because it is heartbreaking. And also that her brother can be a jerk in regards to animals (specifically ones that are his pets), though she kind of knew that one already.
He got sick of caring for ST quite a while ago, and so has been cruelly ignoring him since. As such, ST has been reduced to a twitching ball of unloved woe.
